Thomas Michael "Tommy" Oar (Southport, 10 december 1991) is een Australische voetbalspeler. Hij speelt momenteel als aanvaller voor de Nederlandse Eredivisie club FC Utrecht. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de beste jonge talenten in Australië en zijn speelstijl, samen met zijn relatief jonge leeftijd, heeft vergelijkingen met landgenoot Harry Kewell.

Clubcarrière
Oar tekende een driejarig contract met de Brisbane Roar bij het begin van het seizoen 2008/09. In zijn tweede wedstrijd, tegen de Wellington Phoenix, scoorde hij zijn eerste competitiedoelpunt, dat was het winnende doelpunt uit een vrije trap in de 91ste minuut.

Hij ontving zijn eerste rode kaart vroeg in het seizoen 2009-10 in een wedstrijd tegen Gold Coast United.

In januari 2010 ondertekend Oar een contract bij de Nederlandse agent Rob Jansen en werd onmiddellijk in verband met een verhuizing aan het einde van het seizoen 2009-10 naar Feyenoord Rotterdam en is sindsdien uitgenodigd om te trainen bij een andere Nederlandse club FC Utrecht met collega Roar spelers, Michael Zullo en Adam Sarota.

In maart 2010, vanwege zijn prestaties gedurende het gehele seizoen was hij gunning van de Rising Star Award voor de Beste Jonge Speler en geselecteerd op de bank in de A-League Team van het Jaar.

Op 2 april 2010 kwam het nieuws naar buiten dat hij als een collectieve deal, samen met collega's Roar spelers Michael Zullo en Adam Sarota, voor meer dan AU 1.800.000 dollar zou zijn verkocht aan FC Utrecht. Oar tekende een 5 jarige deal.



Vorig jaar had ik al veel van m verwacht maar dat bleek nog wat te vroeg, was veel op reis met verschillende nationale Australische teams (onder-20, A-selectie) en moest duidelijk wennen aan de trainings-intensiteit hier in Nederland. Verder had ie natuurlijk een prima speler voor zich met de naam Dries Mertens.

Dit seizoen mag ie laten zien wat ie in huis heeft en is Tommy de eerste linksbuiten, voorlopig gaat dit uitstekend met 1 doelpunt en 2 assists in 4 wedstrijden.

Heeft echt een ontzettend goede pass in zijn linkerbeen, werkt altijd keihard, kan op snelheid een mannetje passeren, en kan net als good old Dave vd Bergh een voorzet geven zonder zijn tegenstander te passeren.

En nog maar 19 jaar oud, als ie zich sterk blijft ontwikkelen wordt hij het nieuwe goudhaantje van FC Utrecht.

Australia's next big thing Tommy Oar: The start of this season at Utrecht couldn't have gone any better personally EXCLUSIVE: Goal.com speaks to the highly-rated Socceroos teenager who is making a big impact in the Dutch Eredivisie this term after moving to the Netherlands in 2010 FC Utrecht's exciting Australian starlet Tommy Oar says the 2011-12 season couldn't have got off to a better start for him after two goals and three assists early in the campaign. The 19-year-old former Brisbane Roar winger, who joined Utrecht in April last year, managed only 13 appearances in all competitions for Utrecht last term but has become a regular in the team this campaign. Oar's fine early season form follows on from his impressive performances at the Under-20 Fifa World Cup in July and August, where he was awarded the Goal of the Tournament award for his superb long-range free-kick in Australia's opening game against Ecuador. Speaking to Goal.com, the teenager, who has four senior Australia caps and was part of the Socceroos squad which reached the final of the 2011 Asian Cup, revealed he's been delighted with his recent run. “Since the U-20 World Cup I've started every single game. So the start of this season couldn't have gone any better personally,” the 2009-10 A-League Young Player Of The Year winner said. “I'm really happy with how everything has gone. The challenge is now to keep going.” The left-sided attacker, who joined the Dutch club from Brisbane in a collective deal along with young Aussie pair Adam Sarota and Michael Zullo, struggled to break into the Utrecht first team on a regular basis in his debut season but said that experience had helped him develop. “Last year I learned a lot. It was difficult for me to make the first team because of Dries Mertens, who was the left winger at the club. He now plays for PSV and is the leading scorer in the competition (with seven goals),” Oar said. “Now we've sold him it's given me an opportunity. Last year, I learned a lot from not only him, but also the opposition who we were playing. This year I've got a lot of confidence now I've been given an opportunity.” Oar continued: “I've actually improved already in the games I've had. In the first few games I didn't perform badly, so I got some confidence from them. “Ever since then I got my first goal (against Roda JC on August 27) I've tried to take it one game at a time, but I think I've been getting better and better. I just want to keep that going.” Oar added that new Utrecht coach Erwin Koeman, who replaced Ton du Chatinier in the European summer, had enabled him freedom to take shots and play with flair which had helped him this season. “I like the way he likes to play the game which is quite attacking and allows us to express ourselves,” Oar said. “He's got a really positive outlook on the game which gives you a lot of freedom on the field, so you don't worry about mistakes and you just go for it and try put pressure on the opposition.” Oar continued: “This year we have an extremely young squad. The average age in the starting line-up would be 22 or 23 which is quite remarkable. So he gives the youngsters a chance.” The teenager's second goal for the club came in spectacular style after he started a solo run inside his own half before unleashing a long-range left-foot shot which nestled into the top corner against De Graafschap in the Dutch Cup last week. “I got the ball in my own half and it just opened up for me. I was pretty fortunate, I kept running with the ball and took a shot and it went alright,” the under-stated Oar said. The strike was similar to the one which won Oar the Goal of the Tournament award at the U-20 World Cup, emphasising the point his powerful left boot is becoming quite the weapon. “Shooting is a big part of my game. When I get a bit of space and I get an opportunity to shoot, I do it. Hopefully I can keep it going,” Oar said. Oar's form has prompted some calls for a return to the national team, having not been involved with the Socceroos since the Asian Cup, but the youngster insisted he was only focusing on club matters right now. “I haven't thought too much about the national team too much lately because I've been concentrating on Utrecht,” Oar said. “Hopefully if I can do really well here, the national team will just fall into place. You've just to play well for your club and take things as they come.” Oar outlined that Utrecht's focus this campaign was on qualifying for Europe, having played in the Europa League last term before missing out for this season after 2010-11's ninth-place finish. “We have the same goals as last year. It's to get in the play-offs,” Oar said. “At the moment it's very early in the season. But if we keep on going we should be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. For us, it's about getting as many points as we can.” As for who he fancies in the Eredivisie title race, Oar said he felt a few ex-Utrecht players could be crucial. “Obviously Ajax is a fantastic team. But for me personally I think PSV this year,” Oar said. “They've signed two FC Utrecht players from last year in Dries Mertens and Kevin Strootman, who plays for the Dutch national team now and is only 21 now. They have some amazing players coming through. I see them as the best team this year and the team every wants to beat.”
