Wie kent hem niet? Als speler kennen veel mensen hem niet, z'n bescheiden carrière bracht hem niet zo ver omdat het hem ontbrak aan snelheid en kracht.
Als trainer, daar waar hij het vak af kon kijken van z'n pa (Félix, onder wie hij nog gespeeld heeft bij Rio Ave F.C. meen ik?), heeft hij grote dingen behaald.
Het begon, echter, compleet anders; namelijk als tolk van Sir Bobby Robson bij Sporting Lissabon (1992), in 1993 volgde hij Robson naar FC Porto en in 1996/1997 kwam Mourinho zo terecht bij FC Barcelona.

FC Barcelona
Toen Von Gahl bij FC Barcelona in dienst kwam, werd Mourinho zijn assistent-trainer. Ook werd hij coach van Barça B.

Portugal
Mourinho heeft ook wat dingetjes gedaan in Portugal:
2000/2001 -> Trainer van SL Benfica.
2001/2002 -> Trainer van União Leiria die hij van de degradatie redde en ze Europa in stuurde.
2003/2004 -> Trainer van FC Porto. Hier won hij een UEFA Cup (2003) en een UEFA Champions League (2004). Daarnaast, om de prijzenkast wat op te vullen, 2 titels, 1 beker en een supercup.

Chelsea
Na 2004 was'ie het zat in Portugal en wilde hij laten zien ook goed Engels te spreken dus ging hij aan de slag bij Chelsea FC.
Om aan te tonen dat hij toch wel een speciaal ventje was, zorgde hij prompt voor de Engelse titel.. Dit was Chelsea 1 maal eerder gelukt, zo'n 50 jaar geleden. In seizoen 2005/2006 deed hij dit nog eens dunnetjes over.
19 september 2007 is dan ook een historische zwarte dag want toen was'ie weg.

Internazionale
Na Chelsea trad hij in dienst bij Internazionale en ging hier verder met het behalen van successen. In 2008 behaalde hij de supercup en de titel van seizoen 2008/2009 wist hij ook eventjes binnen te slepen.

Valdano subsequently gave the player permission to explain himself publicly. - Mourinho has consistently asked for a new No 9, while the club prefers to wait and see how Higuain recovers from a back injury. The coach believes that Higuain needs an operation that will result in a lengthy lay off, while the club prefers an alternative, more optimistic less invasive approach. In order to resolve the matter, Mourinho suggested that the player visit a specialist in Portugal, the club refused. - Mourinho does not believe that Karim Benzema is up to the task of leading the line at Real and has only used the player as an impact substitute; the club insist that, as one of the president’s acquisitions, he is shielded from criticism. - Winters in Madrid are harsh and fiercely cold, and the training pitches at the club’s Valdebebas do not have sufficient heating. - All 25 first-team squad players were given a television as a Christmas gift by the club. Mourinho received one, but none of his assistants or technical staff were similarly rewarded. This goes against Mourinho’s belief that everyone should be treated equally. - Mourinho is also unimpressed at the treatment received by other club employees. Mourinho felt very let down when he arrived at the match and saw Valdano greet Preciado like an old friend. - When he took charge in the summer, Mourinho believed that he would have full control over the team, and that Valdano’s role was to assist and support him in his decisions; in contrast, he feels that the sporting director is working for the club and not the manager. - With just one match remaining before the club goes into the winter break, it is clear that the tensions simmering beneath the surface at Real are about to come to the surface. It is most likely that the football director will be the one who has to give way, but in a drama involving Real and Mourinho; it will be fascinating watching how it unfolds over Christmas. Changes to the management structure are likely, and Valdano is probably the one who will have to make way.

Als je hem wat geld geeft, ken ik geen andere trainer die er op de korte termijn zo'n goed en solide team van kan maken. Maar hij heeft nooit een dynastie opgezet met 1 of meerdere goede teams bij dezelfde club over een langere periode. Heeft hij het geduld ook niet voor.

Mourinho wins Panchina d'Oro

Jose Mourinho has been awarded the Panchina d'Oro award for his achievements with Inter last season.

The Special One won the treble in the 2009-10 campaign before leaving for Real Madrid.

Mourinho was bitter to lose out on last year's award which went to Max Allegri who was then in charge of Cagliari.

This year he beat off competition from Gigi Del Neri and Claudio Ranieri, who finished second and third respectively.

Pierpaolo Bisoli was the deserving winner of the Serie B Panchina d'Argento for getting Cesena promoted to the top flight.

Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho 'escapes knife attack' A man armed with a dagger is reported to have tried to stab Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho as he signed autographs in a Spanish airport. A member of the club's security staff was said to have received a 4cm (1.5in) stab wound in the incident at La Coruna in Galicia, northern Spain. The incident happened last Friday but has only just been reported by the Cadena Sur news channel. It is not clear if Mr Mourinho was aware of the attack at the time. Cadena Sur says the security staff member did not realise he had been stabbed until he was on the team bus. However, security cameras at the airport may have captured the incident, it says. Quoting a source at Real Madrid, Cadena Sur says the club has increased security for its game against Racing Santander this weekend.

Tja, ieder z'n smaak qua soort voetbal en iedereen mag van de tactiek vinden wat ie wil, maar het moet niet zo zijn dat een ploeg die het meer op het fysieke gooit en vooral bezig is met het ontregelen wordt afgefloten als een Barca speler opspringt als een idioot op het moment dat ie met een teennagel geraakt wordt omdat ze verder wellicht meer het voetbal willen spelen wat de meerderheid liefst ziet. Want dat mag totaal geen issue zijn.

Aan de andere kant kun je ook stellen dat Mourinho met z'n ploeg zich het minst goed wist aan te passen aan die omstandigheden (van de manier van fluiten van de arbiter dus).
