Cruzeiro en Monaco A talented right sided full back, Maicon debuted for Cruzeiro in 2001 and after two successful seasons in Brazil which included winning a championship and being called up for the Brazilian national team in 2003, he was signed by French club Monaco in June 2004. Internazionale In July 2006, Internazionale officially announced the signing of Maicon on a five-year contract along with fellow Brazilian fullback Maxwell and French midfielder Olivier Dacourt. During his time at Inter, he has established himself as a reliable wing-back, solid defensively with an ability of making emphatic runs down the right wing, often setting up for goals or scoring himself with his powerful right foot. He has overtaken Inter captain Javier Zanetti as first choice right back. He is generally considered as one of the best wing-backs in the game and is first choice in the Brazil national team, ahead of FC Barcelona defender Daniel Alves. During a UEFA Champions League match on March 6, 2007, he was involved in a brawl with Valencia defender David Navarro. Maicon was originally banned for six matches, but the ban was reduced to three. A regular under former coach José Mourinho, he contributed his fair share of assists and goals as Inter won a fourth consecutive title in the 2008–09 season, including a match-winning brace against Siena. He has continued the good form he displayed in previous seasons during the 2009/2010 season. He started the season by scoring a goal against Milan in the 4–0 derby victory, and then playing well against Barcelona in a 0–0 draw at the Giuseppe Meazza. He subsequently set up Diego Milito on matchday 5 against Napoli, as Inter defeated Napoli with 3–1. He also scored the last goal in a 5–0 win over Genoa. He also made a fantastic byline run which resulted in Milito's match killing goal in a 5–3 home victory over Palermo and the very next match he scored the killer goal against A.S. Livorno Calcio, which ended 2–0 for Inter. During Inter's home leg of the Derby d'Italia, the right back opened the scoring against Juventus with one of the most spectacular goals of the season, juggling a loose ball over the onrushing defender at the top of the penalty box and volleying it into the opposite corner[3]. Later that month Maicon scored his first champions league goal this season against reigning champs FC Barcelona when Internazionale registered a famous victory over the Catalans. He reportedly knocked out a tooth after he collided with fellow south American Lionel Messi. FC Internazionale have continued with good form and have bagged a historical treble this season. Having overtaken Roma at the summit of the Serie A, Inter went on to knock out FC Barcelona from the Champions League. Inter won the Copa Italia final against Roma. Maicon's contribution to Inter Milan have included staunch defending and offensive support, place him in contention for the 2010 ballon d'Or. On May 22, 2010 Inter won and thus completing the Treble with a 2–0 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabeu. He was named the 2009-2010 UEFA club defender of the year.

Ik begrijp wel wat je bedoelt hoor, maar ik erger me zo aan de ophemeling van Maicon, terwijl hij inderdaad af-en-toe leuk mee opkomt, maar dat doet Rosales bij Twente of die draver Alves bij Barca ook wel. Maicon mag wat mij betreft de veters van een Zanetti nog niet wassen. Toch wordt die eerste altijd zo geweldig gevonden...

Dat kan, ik kijk niet naar deze wedstrijd, maar ik had het eigenlijk niet zozeer over deze wedstrijd.

Inter invite Maicon offers

Inter director Marco Branca has hinted Douglas Maicon could leave, “but so far we haven’t received adequate offers.”

There are question marks over the Brazilian after they secured a deal for Santos starlet Jonathan.

“We have no intention of selling out big players. We could only talk about it when faced with incredible offers,” technical director Branca told Sky Sport Italia.

“Jonathan will arrive next week, but he won’t be Maicon’s replacement, because Maicon is staying as so far we haven’t received adequate offers.”

It is effectively a call for clubs, above all Real Madrid, to make a proposal for the right-back.

Another veteran considering his future is Lucio, whose contract expires in June 2012.

“There is a problem over the length of Lucio’s contract in the renegotiations, but we are confident he can stay with us.”

Branca also commented on other players linked with Inter this summer.

“Eder Banega? We cannot talk about negotiations as such, but there is an interest. Erik Lamela is a player we are tracking.”
