FC Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid CF: Franz Beckenbauer Abschiedsspiel Preview; Match Live On ESPN Friday Afternoon

on the runFriday night in Munich, the stars will sparkle both in the sky and on the pitch as FC Bayern Munich host Real Madrid in the final preseason friendly of this season. The Abschiedsspiel or farewell match will honor Franz Beckenbauer, who never received the honor when he left Munich to join the New York Cosmos, and later Hamburger SV. In an unprecedented move, ESPN will air the match live beginning at 2:55 p.m. Eastern time. It will be tremendous exposure for FC Bayern to a wider American audience. I don’t have the research tools to verify, but I believe this could be the first time since a 2004 Champions League duel with Chelsea that a Bayern match has appeared on the ESPN “flagship” channel. We can only hope they have well-prepared announcers who have actually paid attention to the club. The match will also simulcast on ESPN Deportes and ESPN 3. And Bayern Offside will be here with the liveblog, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Eastern

Careful Selection
Louis van Gaal has ruled out Demichelis, Gomez, Kroos, and Tymoshchuk from action, as each of them played the full 90 minutes for their national teams on Wednesday. However, both Franck Ribery and Daniel van Buyten have been ruled fit to play, and will see some action. It’s a careful balancing act for Van Gaal, as the opening DFB Pokal match looms on Monday. You could certainly imagine Bayern thinking they can “scrape by” on Monday, but that’s part of a recipe for an upset defeat in the first round, something Bayern has avoided for more than a decade.

So I think despite the level of competition, we won’t see the boys in black (the new CL shirt will debut) taking the match all too seriously. We should see the return of Jörg Butt to the nets, and the appearance of the true projected back four of Lahm-Van Buyten-Badstuber-Contento isn’t out of the question. Edson Braafheid will almost certainly see significant minutes at left back, and with Demichelis and Tymoshchuk rules out, expect Maximilian Haas to get into the match at some point. The midfield has the most depth, and the only real question is whether Van Gaal will entertain using Altintop or Alaba. Since he didn’t strictly rule them out in his comments, I would expect both to see some time. Ivica Olic played a half on Wednesday, so perhaps a half against Madrid is realistic. Update: Olic has been ruled out of this match and Monday’s DFB Pokal with knee problem. The other forward slots will be occupied by Klose, Müller and probably one of the amateurs. Expect to see a lot of different players, and a guy like Pranjic may end up in 3 different positions before it’s all over.

As for Real Madrid, it’s unclear which of their international stars will be cleared for duty on Friday by new coach Jose Mourinho. One familiar face we do know we’ll be seeing is Sami Khedira, and that will make for some interesting moments in midfield between Sami and Bastian undoubtedly.
