There is an air of cautious optimism in South Africa as the Rainbow Nation prepares to write what is undoubtedly the most significant chapter of its short football history. A mammoth task lies ahead.

Recent years have brought ample disappointments, but Bafana Bafana have also shown, albeit in patches, that - given motivation and purpose - they can be a potent threat. And there can be no greater motivation than representing their country in a FIFA World Cupâ„¢ on home soil.

In 1996, four years after their readmission to international football, South Africa shot to prominence and stunned the African continent by claiming their maiden CAF Africa Cup of Nations trophy against Tunisia at Soccer City in Johannesburg. How ironic that, 16 years later, South Africa will return to the venue where they achieved this first major success, aiming to rewrite the script on an even bigger stage.

Their gallant performance at the FIFA Confederations Cup last June, when they lost narrowly to Brazil in the semi-finals and to Spain in the third place play-off, should certainly serve as a chilling reminder to their detractors that this team, when stretched to its potential, cannot be underestimated. That tournament witnessed several impressive performances strung together by the hosts, and ultimately it was only their inability to convert cleverly-tailored moves into goals that led to their demise.

The road to South Africa
South Africa, by virtue of their role as hosts, gained automatic qualification.

The star players
Talented midfield maestro Steven Pienaar is South Africa's prize assert. In the absence of the country's most successful striker, Benni McCarthy, who remains out of favour, Pienaar brings much-needed innovation and imagination to the side.

Since his arrival at Everton, Pienaar has reinvented himself and matured as an all-round player. While he continues to polarise opinion in his native country, no-one in South Africa disputes the confidence he exudes on the field and his ability to inject inspiration into the team's play. His performances during the FIFA Confederations Cup were yet another reminder that he will be key to any South African success in 2010.

Yet arguably just as vital to the Bafana Bafana cause are two players who have laboured tirelessly and effectively with little recognition: wingbacks Siboniso Gaxa and the enterprising Tsepho Masilela.

The coach
Now in his second stint as a South Africa coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira's return was greeted with mixed feelings in South Africa, although the Brazilian's many supporters are adamant that he is the man to lead this side to the ‘Promised Land' in 2010. Parreira certainly has the pedigree, having led his native country to the beautiful game's ultimate prize at the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA. The extensively-travelled coach also brings a wealth of experience, which should prove vital in revitalising a South African side struggling with some significant pre-tournament problems. However, Parreira will be hoping to avoid the difficulties he endured during an inauspicious first spell as head coach, which witnessed him fail to lead South Africa beyond the first round at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Previous FIFA World Cups
South Africa have failed to make it beyond the group stages in either of their two previous FIFA World Cup appearances. Clearly, this is a situation they will be desperate to remedy. Their first appearance was in France 1998, six years after they had been readmitted to the global football family. Despite a 3-0 drubbing to France in their opening game, they went on to put a decent show against Denmark and Saudi Arabia, drawing against both. Korea/Japan 2002 was expected to be an opportunity for Bafana Bafana to step up to the next level but, ultimately, they flattered to deceive, crashing out after the group stage despite beating Slovenia 1-0 for their first-ever FIFA World Cup win.

Erasmus doet gooi naar WK-selectie met prima optreden in Brazilië Kermit Erasmus heeft zijn visitekaartje afgegeven bij bondscoach Carlos Alberto Perreira door in Brazilië een uitstekende oefenwedstrijd te spelen voor zijn land Zuid-Afrika. De kleine aanvaller van Excelsior scoorde twee keer in het gewonnen duel met de reserves van Fluminese, zo meldt Voetbal International. Zuid-Afrika won de wedstrijd uiteindelijk met maar liefst 8-0 van de Braziliaanse club. Het was het tweede oefenduel van Bafana Bafana in het Zuid-Amerikaanse land. Erasmus mocht zich van Excelsior-trainer Alex Pastoor in de kijker spelen bij bondscoach Parreira. De Rotterdamse club was niet verplicht haar aanvaller af te staan voor de oefentrip van Zuid-Afrika in Brazilië. De negentienjarige Erasmus is bezig aan zijn eerste seizoen bij de Kralingers. Tot dusver speelde de Zuid-Afrikaan 25 duels voor Excelsior, waarin hij elf doelpunten scoorde. Feyenoord haalde de aanvaller in de zomer van 2008 naar Rotterdam, maar in zijn eerste seizoen bij de Kuipbewoners speelde Erasmus slechts vier duels. Voorafgaand aan dit seizoen besloot Feyenoord hem een jaar te stallen bij Excelsior.

Vijftig dagen voor de start van het wereldkampioenschap voetbal in Zuid-Afrika lijkt het gastland nog niet in vorm. Bij een oefenduel met Noord-Korea kwam de ploeg van trainer Carlos Alberto Parreira donderdag niet verder dan 0-0. De wedstrijd werd gespeeld in Wiesbaden waar Zuid-Afrika zich voorbereidt op het WK. Op het oefenduel waren slechts 628 toeschouwers afgekomen. Zuid-Afrika, dat zonder spelers uit de Europese competities aantrad, was in de eerste helft duidelijk de betere partij. Na rust waren de Noord-Koreanen weer beter en miste Ji Yun Nam een opgelegde kans. Parreira had vrede met de remise. "Het is bovendien goed dat we tegen WK-deelnemers kunnen oefenen." South Africa kick off the tournament on June 11 against Mexico, at Soccer City in Johannesburg. There are nineteen home based players in all on the list with the remaining ten playing in various leagues across Europe. Other notable inclusions in the team are Steven Pienaar of Everton and Siphiwe Tshabalala who plays for Kaizer Chiefs in the South African league. Coach Parreira will announce his final final 23-man squad for the tournament on 1 June, 10 days before the tournament begins. According to coach Parreira, his main headache will be how to intergrate the foreign based players, with the locally based boys. "This is going to be rather difficult, not because the overseas-based players are coming to this camp, but because we don't know what condition they will come in - physically and technically," Parreira said. "Some of them have played too many games - like Steven Pienaar who has played 27 games since November, some have played half of what Pienaar played while others started in one or two. "So they will come here in different fitness levels, which will give our physical trainer a lot of headaches to put them in good shape for the competition," said the coach. The Bafana Bafana have just ended a three week training camp in Germany, with coach Parreira complaining about the quality of the opposition they faced. Volgens mij trekt Ajax Cape town ook maar een paar duizend toeschouwers; van de FIFA moest er echter een nieuw stadion komen (terwijl het oude voor veeeel minder geld aangepast had kunnen worden), dat is echter amper te bereiken voor de zwarte bevolking. Dat geld hadden ze beter kunnen investeren.

Internationals Zuid-Afrika mogen een ton per doelpunt verdelen Het nationale elftal van Zuid-Afrika strijdt op het aankomende WK voor meer dan alleen de eer. De voetbalbond van het WK-gastland heeft de internationals laten weten dat zij per doelpunt één miljoen rand mogen verdelen, ongeveer 100.000 euro. Dat meldt het ANP. "We willen dat ons land met trots en passie speelt, dus met deze beloning hopen we hen te inspireren", zei bondsdirecteur Leslie Sedibe. De bond moet nog wel om de tafel om de wedstrijdpremie en bonussen vast te stellen. Hij wil met een elftalafvaardiging van zes man, aangevoerd door captain Aaron Mokoena, gaan praten. "Het zal geen blanco cheque zijn", verduidelijkt Sedibe. De internationals weten helaas dat de Zuid-Afrikaanse bond haar beloftes lang niet altijd is nagekomen wanneer het ging om premies, en dus zullen er nog wel de nodige afspraken gemaakt moeten worden. De spits kwam in januari over van Blackburn Rovers, maar haalde sindsdien vooral de krantenkoppen vanwege zijn overgewicht. "Hij is de enige speler van wie ik echt hoop dat hij naar het WK gaat. Misschien komt hij dan wat fitter terug", aldus West Ham-voorzitter David Sullivan. Mijn eigen vetpercentage is 25,2, maar ik ben een 61-jarige man die niet verder komt dan ochtendgymnastiek." West Ham is absoluut niet blij met McCarthy en overweegt stappen te nemen.
