Naam: Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli (SSC Napoli)

Opgericht: 1926
Bijnaam: Azzurri, Partenopei

Erelijst:
- Scudetto in 1986/87, 1989/90
- Coppa Italië winnaar in 1962, 1976, 1987
- Italiaanse Supercup winnaar in 1990
- UEFA Cup winnaar in 1989
- Anglo-Italian League Cup winnaar in 1976

Stadion: San Paulo

Napoli 2-0 Villarreal
Hamsik 15 (N), Cavani pen 17 (N)
Stadio San Paolo

Napoli made a triumphant return to the San Paolo in the Champions League, beating Villarreal 2-0. As Manchester City lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich, they are already three points clear in second place.

The Partenopei had a great start to the Champions League, holding City to a draw in Manchester, so hoped to notch up their first victory in a packed and passionate San Paolo. Blerim Dzemaili, Marco Donadel, Christian Maggio and Miguel Angel Britos were sidelined, but the Three Tenors started up front. Villarreal had said Giuseppe Rossi was out after a knock, but he made a shock start. Marco Ruben was injured and Borja Valero suspended.

The atmosphere in the first European Cup game at the San Paolo in 21 years was predictably astonishing, even with the crowd singing along to the Champions League theme and fireworks making visibility difficult in the opening minutes.

Salvatore Aronica was booked for a shirt tug on Nilmar after four minutes. Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marek Hamsik and Edinson Cavani combined with Pocho eventually drilling just over.

Hamsik broke the deadlock when he was left totally unmarked at the back post thanks to ex-Udinese defender Cristian Zapata's slip to meet Lavezzi's cross and fire across the goalkeeper.

Moments later Lavezzi burst into the box and was tripped by Gonzalo Rodriguez, who received a yellow card for the obvious penalty. Cavani stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to double Napoli's lead.

A through ball had sent Rossi into the area, but he was cut short by a perfectly-timed Andrea Dossena challenge. Cavani was helping out at the back when his awful backpass was intercepted by Nilmar, but fired wide.

Villarreal were in trouble and made a tactical change after 32 minutes, replacing Gonzalo Rodriguez with Javier Camunas.

It was a more even game from then on, though Napoli remained comfortably in control. Straight after the restart Cavani was again caught offside in an extremely tight decision, though Morgan De Sanctis plucked a Rossi header out of the air.

Villarreal were pouring forward in the second half, as indeed they had to. Paolo Cannavaro caught Rossi on the edge of the box with an arm across Pepito's chest, but the Marcos Senna free kick was into the wall. On the counter, Lavezzi over-hit the ball and it ran out of play.

A smart Hamsik pass sent Cavani clear, but Zapata got back well to block as he was pulling the trigger. The Uruguayan felt that collision and was limping badly, so made way for Goran Pandev.

Zapata, Rossi and Nilmar all had shots charged down in quick succession. Nilmar also wanted a penalty, but the referee was close by and judged Juan Zuniga got the ball.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Napoli: De Sanctis; Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Aronica; Zuniga, Inler, Gargano, Dossena; Hamsik (Mascara 79), Lavezzi (Santana 88); Cavani (Pandev 71)

Villarreal: Diego Lopez; Zapata, Musacchio, Gonzalo Rodriguez (Camunas 32), Català; Cani, Senna (Mubarak 84), Bruno Soriano, De Guzman (Perez 84); Rossi; Nilmar

Ref: De Bleeckere (Bel)

Inter 0 - 1 Napoli Half-Time
Campagnaro 43 (N)
Stadio Meazza

Napoli had a penalty saved, but lead 10-man Inter at half-time thanks to Hugo Campagnaro. Joel Obi was controversially sent off.

This Scudetto showdown had both teams fresh from impressive Champions League victories. Claudio Ranieri hoped to continue his 100 per cent record since replacing Gian Piero Gasperini. Wesley Sneijder, Thiago Motta, Ivan Cordoba, Andrea Poli and the suspended Andrea Ranocchia were out, but surprisingly Giampaolo Pazzini and Douglas Maicon (his first start of the season) were picked despite fitness issues. Napoli had to do without top scorer Edinson Cavani, so Inter-owned Goran Pandev took his place, moving Ezequiel Lavezzi to centre-forward.

Diego Forlan horribly scuffed a volley in a fast and furious start to the match. The Uruguayan smashed another strike just past the far post, while Pazzini at full stretch saw his attempt deflected over by Hugo Campagnaro.

At the other end, a cross found Juan Zuniga at the back post unable to steer his header accurately. Gokhan Inler's free kick was well over.

Pazzini thought he had scored on 23 minutes. Morgan De Sanctis only parried a Javier Zanetti screamer and Pazzo tapped in the loose ball, but was ruled offside in a very tight decision.

Moments later Joel Obi's cross went past three players in the middle - Maicon, Cristian Chivu and Lucio - unable to get the final touch.

Zuniga's cross to the near post was inches away from Lavezzi's head. Lavezzi was livid with the referee when he went on the counter and fell under pressure from Zanetti just outside the box, but play was waved on.

Lavezzi took a free kick quickly to send Pandev through, but he got the ball caught between his feet and bundled it out of play.

On 41 minutes, the game changed. Obi had already been booked, somewhat harshly, when he clattered into the back of Christian Maggio for a penalty and second yellow card. However, the foul appeared to start outside the box. With Cavani absent, Marek Hamsik stepped up and Julio Cesar parried it, but only into the path of Campagnaro for the tap-in.

Cristian Chivu also limped off to make way for Yuto Nagatomo. The tension got to Inter, as Julio Cesar was booked for dissent and carried on his protests for some time, as several players had to push him away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter: Julio Cesar; Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu (Nagatomo 42); Zanetti, Cambiasso, Obi; Alvarez; Forlan, Pazzini

Napoli: De Sanctis; Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Aronica; Maggio, Inler, Gargano, Zuniga; Hamsik, Lavezzi, Pandev

Sent off: Obi 41 (I)

Missed penalty: Hamsik 43 (N)

Inter 0 - 3 Napoli
Campagnaro 43 (N), Maggio 56 (N), Hamsik 75 (N)
Stadio Meazza

Napoli's thumping 3-0 victory at San Siro is their first in 17 years, but 10-man Inter were furious with the referee. There were doubts over Joel Obi's dismissal and the penalty that broke the deadlock, but it was the perfect way for Walter Mazzarri to celebrate his 50th birthday.

Napoli's record at San Siro was appalling, as they had lost all seven visits since a 2-0 victory in 1994.

Campagnaro and three Inter players had encroached.

Cristian Chivu also limped off to make way for Yuto Nagatomo. The tension got to Inter, as Julio Cesar was booked for dissent and carried on his protests for some time, as several players had to push him away.

Ranieri also joined the protests at half-time and was sent off. Inter were still in it, as Pazzini pulled back from the by-line and Ricky Alvarez got in front of the goalkeeper, but failed to get the decisive touch.

Lavezzi wasted a great counter-attack situation by prodding over the bar.

Moments later, Napoli got their second goal! Substitute Giuseppe Mascara chipped a pass over the top for Maggio's run and he got in front of a distracted Nagatomo to flick it over the stranded Julio Cesar. Inter were simply caught napping.

Napoli incredibly failed to get a third, as Hamsik sprung the offside trap and rolled across for Zuniga, who somehow ballooned well over from six yards.

Moments later De Sanctis rushed off his line to close down Pazzini.

Hamsik did put the result beyond doubt when he again caught the Inter defence by surprise going through the middle on Lavezzi's pass and drew out Julio Cesar to side-foot past the 'keeper.

Pazzini was the last to give in and his header skimmed the upright in stoppages.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter: Julio Cesar; Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu (Nagatomo 42); Zanetti, Cambiasso, Obi; Alvarez (Stankovic 61); Forlan (Zarate 67), Pazzini

Napoli: De Sanctis; Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Aronica (Fernandez 86); Maggio, Inler, Gargano, Zuniga; Hamsik, Lavezzi (Chavez 78), Pandev (Mascara 50)

Sent off: Obi 41 (I)

Missed penalty: Hamsik 43 (N)

Napoli October Calendar

Keep in mind there is not always a clear cutoff as to when a ‘month’ of calcio begins and ends. The Inter match, even though it was October 1st, was probably better off grouped together with the September fixtures. So Napoli begins its October fixtures on the 15th thanks to an ongoing international break. The opponents? Find out after the jump.

The month is highlighted by a home and away against Bundesliga giants Bayern. After losing the opening game of the Bundesliga season 1-0, the Bavarian club has gone on a little streak of scoring 27 goals without conceding any. All of these matches have been wins except a 0-0 draw with Hoffenheim last weekend. In that spell, Bayern is 6-1-0 in the Bundesliga, and 4-0-0 in the Champions League (they had two playoff games against FC Zurich.) If Napoli wants to prove themselves against a top European club, Bayern is the perfect opportunity. And unlike the Barca friendly these games count. But before all that Napoli hosts Parma at the San Paolo to kick things off.

Oct. 15 – Parma
Oct. 18 – Bayern Munich
Oct. 23 – @ Cagliari
Oct. 26 – Udinese
Oct. 30 – @ Catania
Nov. 2 – @ Bayern Munich

What a month! 6 games in 19 days, and it ends with going to Sicily and Bavaria in a 4 day span. Of course, these are the rewards of being in the Champions League: a packed calendar, and the need to rotate players.

The Udinese game won’t be a walk in the park either. Towards the end of last season with both teams chasing a Champions League spot, Guidolin’s men came into the San Paolo and outplayed Napoli to earn a 2-1 win. This season we’ve been finding out that Sanchez, Inler, and Zapata weren’t as irreplacable as we thought. Di Natale is at the top of the scoring charts yet again, young players like Isla, Agyemang-Badu, Armero, and Benatia continue to improve, and in Gabriel Torje they’ve found yet another talented prospect who will likely be sold off at a huge profit one day. I wouldn’t be surprised if Udinese repeat their success of last season – being co-leaders after 5 weeks suggests they will be a big problem for any Serie A team.

Catania seems to have improved a little under Vincenzo Montella – despite selling star defender Matias Silvestre to Palermo – and Cagliari are currently level on 10 points with Napoli. Ex Napoli allenatore Roberto Donadoni has some intersting things to say about the goings on in Sardinia. Either way Cagliari did well to secure Massimo Ficcandeti, who is proving his achievements at Cesena last season were no fluke.

So it promises to be an exciting month with lots of challenges, but as always Mazzarri will treat every game like a final.

And finally, I remember the day when Cesare Prandelli said his Italy would be a meritocracy, and that in form players would be given a chance rather than the coach’s favourites (I think he was referring to Lippi’s 2010 World Cup team here.) But it seems like Prandelli is going with his favourites… no Cannavaro, no Alessandro Matri, but Cigarini gets a recall only 5 games after returning to Atalanta. I know Cigarini’s talented, but doesn’t seem like a meritocracy to me. Seems like Prandelli likes certain players to fit his system, same as Lippi before him. As least you can’t argue with Prandelli’s results to date.

Napoli - Parma

Stadio San Paolo

Napoli can no longer hide they are genuine Scudetto contenders and welcome Sebastian Giovinco’s Parma with confidence sky high.

Walter Mazzarri had been eager to keep the title talk quiet, but after comprehensively beating both reigning holders Milan and the mighty Inter, there’s little doubt left they are in this race. There was controversy in the 3-0 victory at San Siro, as the Nerazzurri had Joel Obi harshly sent off and the penalty foul was outside the box, but their verve was undeniable.

Of course, this is precisely the kind of game that Napoli tend to slip up on. Against the big clubs they are fired up and completely concentrated, whereas so far this season the Partenopei have lost to Chievo and been held here by Fiorentina. It is also true that Parma play the kind of counter-attacking football that can be very effective at the San Paolo.

Giovinco will be confident after his first Italy start against Northern Ireland this week, while he ought to be partnered by Sergio Floccari. Hernan Crespo is still struggling with injury, though another option is Graziano Pellé. Belief has played a crucial part so far this term, which might explain the zero points earned away from home. The 3-1 over Genoa was a morale booster, but Parma know this is a whole other kettle of fish.

Napoli welcome back Edinson Cavani, who missed the Inter game with a sprained ankle only to recover for Uruguay. He scored on international duty and his return is perfectly-timed, as understudy Goran Pandev is out for just under a month. Miguel Angel Britos and Marco Donadel are still injured.

Keep an eye on: Sebastian Giovinco (Parma) – There was a time when the ‘Atomic Ant’ was heavily linked with a move to Naples, but he seems to have found his niche at Parma. More worrying, the Ducali are totally dependent on him, as Giovinco has scored five of the team’s total six goals.

Last five in Serie A: Napoli (W W L D W) Parma (L W L L W)

Last season: Napoli 2-0 Parma

Stat fact: Parma have conquered the Stadio San Paolo twice, earning a 3-2 win here in April 2010 and a crushing 4-0 triumph in January 1997. In all competition, there were also nine home wins and six draws.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Napoli (probable): De Sanctis; Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Aronica; Maggio, Inler, Gargano, Dossena; Hamsik, Lavezzi; Cavani

Parma (probable): Mirante; Zaccardo, Paletta, A Lucarelli, Gobbi; Biabiany, Morrone, Jadid, Modesto; Giovinco, Floccari

Ref: Mazzoleni

Vanavond moeten toch echt drie punten in Napels blijven!

Cagliari 0 - 0 Napoli

Stadio Sant'Elia

Both sides rattled the woodwork in an open game, but it ended goalless between Cagliari and Napoli.

The Partenopei have had trouble juggling Champions League commitments with Serie A, losing at home to Parma and holding Bayern Munich in the past week. They faced a difficult trip to Sardinia, as Cagliari were a point ahead of them in the table. Marco Donadel, Miguel Angel Britos and Goran Pandev were still sidelined. Paolo Cannavaro, Marek Hamsik, Christian Maggio and Gokhan Inler were rested.

Napoli were unbeaten at the Sant'Elia since April 2009, earning a 3-3 draw and last season's 1-0 victory.

After 80 seconds the visitors had a great chance, as a loose ball bounced to Andrea Dossena for a powerful rising shot across the face of goal that skimmed the far post.

Nene' caught Walter Gargano napping in midfield and rushed into the box, forcing Morgan De Sanctis into a very tough save one-on-one.

Cagliari lost defender Davide Astori to a sprained ankle when he fell awkwardly.

The Sardinians again went close to the goal on 23 minutes, as Nene's looping header turned an Andrea Cossu free kick on to the top of the crossbar with De Sanctis well beaten.

Mario Alberto Santana went very close to giving Napoli the lead too, as he spun round from a corner and smacked a fierce strike against the upright.

Moments later, it was Cagliari's chance to hit the woodwork, as Nainggolan's powerful right-foot blockbuster rattled the crossbar.

It was a wide open first half and Michael Agazzi performed a tough save on Santana's dipping header, while De Sanctis had to fingertip a Davide Biondini cross-shot on to post.

Lavezzi seemed irritable throughout the match and upon his substitution hurled his shin-pads at the wall.

Nene's mazy run set up Biondini for an effort smothered at his feet in the six-yard box, while Dossena stung Agazzi's palms from distance.

Blerim Dzemaili got past Pisano only to fire straight at the goalkeeper, while Christian Maggio's strike was well parried at full stretch.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cagliari: Agazzi; Pisano (Perico 88), Canini, Astori (Ariaudo 20), Agostini; Biondini, Conti, Nainggolan; Cossu; Nenè, Thiago Ribeiro (Ibarbo 78)

Napoli: De Sanctis; Campagnaro, Fernandez, Aronica; Zuniga, Gargano (Inler 71), Dzemaili, Dossena; Santana (Maggio 68), Lavezzi (Hamsik 55); Cavani

Ref: Banti

Insigne won’t join Napoli yet

Lorenzo Insigne will remain at Pescara for the entire campaign rather than return to parent club Napoli in January.

The 20-year-old attacking talent is making a name for himself this season under Zdenek Zeman at the Stadio Adriatico.

His performances have been so good that some are suggesting that he could be of use to the Azzurri for the second half of the campaign.

“Insigne belongs to Napoli and sporting director Riccardo Bigon really believes in him,” agent Antonio Ottaiano told Il Sussidiario.

“However, the agreed deal between the two clubs is clear. Insigne was sent to Pescara to learn and grow under a maestro like Zeman.

“A January move to Napoli would just be too soon. As already agreed with Bigon, a decision on his future will be made at the end of the campaign.

“There is no rush and the boy must mature with calm. He wants to play for Napoli, but he has to take it one step at a time.”

Insigne, who made his Italian Under-21 international debut earlier this month, has scored six goals in Serie B for Pescara so far this term.

Updated Napoli Sched And Champions League Thoughts

Napoli’s match with Juve has been rescheduled for Tuesday, November 29th, with the Atalanta game taking place as the anticipo on Saturday, November 26th. As Juve also plays on the 26th (at Lazio) it means both teams will have equal rest. The only possible advantage Napoli has in the rescheduling is that by the 29th they could already be eliminated from advancing in the Champions League. The more I think about it, the more I don’t like how Napoli is situated in Europe. The game with Man City is basically a must win as I will show after the jump.

Here is the current Group A table with goal difference:

Bayern 10 pts, +5
Man City 7 pts, +2
Napoli 5 pts, +1
Villarreal 0 pts, -8

If Man City beats Napoli they will jump to 10 points and Napoli won`t reach higher than 8 assuming they beat Villarreal. This means Napoli will finish 3rd unless Villarreal pull out some magic and win their final 2 matches.

A draw won`t help Napoli much either. It will keep Man City 2 points ahead of Napoli with one matchday left. This means Napoli will have to beat Villarreal and hope Man City lose or draw against Bayern. A draw for Man City on the last matchday would leave them and Napoli on 9 points although Napoli would likely advance on goal difference: the 2 matches between Man City and Napoli were both draws, and if Napoli`s goal difference jumped by more than +1 after they beat Villarreal it would give Napoli a better goal difference (Man City drawing their last two matches would not affect their goal difference.) If Napoli only beats Villarreal by a single goal it would come down to another tiebreaker, possibly goals for.

Even if Napoli beat Man City and go to 10 points, they would have to equal or better Man City`s result on the final day to guarantee 2nd place. A draw against Villarreal might not be enough if Man City can defeat Bayern, and a loss to the Spanish and a Man City draw would again see both clubs tied on 8 points. However, Napoli would have the tiebreaker against Man City in this scenario based on the head to head record.

So there are still a lot possibilities for the final 2 matchdays, but many of them see Napoli finishing 3rd place in the group. If any team in this group is capable of beating Bayern, it might be Man City who would have home field advantage against Bayern on December 7th.

Napoli basically has to beat Man City and Villarreal to guarantee 2nd. Anything else and they will need some help from Bayern Munich on the final matchday to have a chance.

So here is Napoli`s schedule until the Christmas break. With the 2 reschedules (Genoa from giornata 1 and Juve from last week) it means there will be 2 games per week until the winter break.

Sat. November 19 vs. Lazio
Tues. November 22 vs. Man City
Sat. November 26 at Atalanta
Tues. November 29 vs. Juventus
Sat. December 3 vs. Lecce
Tues. December 6 at Villarreal
Sun. December 11 at Novara
Sun. December 18 vs Roma
Wed. December 21 vs Genoa

9 games, and 6 of them at the San Paolo. Right now Napoli is battling on 2 fronts, but their Champions League campaign isn`t as strong as the table suggests, and their Serie A form has dropped after a strong start including wins over Milan and Inter. Perhaps I am being too pessimistic, but Napoli have to win a lot of games between now and Christmas to stay alive on both fronts. .
