Málaga CF #1: op naar de top

Nu deze club bezig is met het opzetten van een fundering om een stabiele subtopper te worden kan een topic niet meer ontbreken. Helemaal niet nu Ruud van Nistelrooij en Joris Mathijsen komend seizoen hun geld bij elkaar harken in Andalusië.

Onder het bewind van Sheik Abdullah al Thani zijn deze zomer naast de twee eerder genoemde Nederlanders ook Jérémy Toulalan (Lyon), Nacho Monreal (Osasuna) en Sergio Sánchez (Sevilla) opgepikt. Diego Buonanotte werd in januari al gecontracteerd, maar maakt nu pas daadwerkelijk de overstap van River Plate.

Bovendien werd Martín Demichelis, het afgelopen halfjaar gehuurd van Bayern München, definitief vastgelegd. Júlio Baptista, Ignacio Camacho, Willy Caballero en Enzo Maresca tekenden in januari al een contract en hadden een groot aandeel in het succesvol verlaten van de degradatiezone.

Al deze nieuwe aankopen gaan de strijd aan met de spelers die er al waren.

Málaga haalt achtste aanwinst binnen

Málaga heeft zich weten te versterken met Francisco Alarcón, ook wel Isco genoemd. De negentienjarige aanvaller komt voor zeven miljoen euro over van Valencia en tekende voor vijf jaar.

De jonge aanvaller kwam vorig seizoen tot vier competitieduels voor de hoofdmacht van Valencia. Voor Valencia B, uitkomend in de Spaanse derde divisie, kwam hij in twee jaar tot 63 competitieduels en 24 doelpunten.

Voorlopig zal het ambitieuze Málaga nog niet kunnen beschikken over Isco, die gelijk een transferclausule van twintig miljoen euro heeft gekregen. De jongeling is momenteel met Spanje op het WK voor spelers onder de twintig jaar actief.

Lijkt me niet. Misschien wat vaker dan vorig seizoen omdat Ruud en Joris, maar verder is het vergelijkbaar met Valencia, Villarreal en Atleti denk ik.

Ligt er ongetwijfeld ook aan of ze de verwachtingen waarmaken. Als ze halverwege het seizoen 15e staan is het niet zo boeiend meer natuurlijk.

Many experts are even throwing them into the race for a European Cup spot next season. What a change if you back track to just six months ago when they were fighting for their relegation lives.


Talking about Málaga has been rather sexy this season. From extreme lows – losing to Real Madrid 7-0 or having a controversial 4-3 decision with Valencia go against them and their highest highs- seeing Julio Baptista return to tear La Liga up and help carry them to an 11th place finish.

The overall picture of this season was yet again one filled with inconsistency. The only difference

If there have been two words that have not mixed too much throughout history, they have been Málaga and stability. If we go back all the way to the days of Atlético Malagueño back in the 1950′s all the way to the team that won the Intertoto Cup to today, this club has been worried about the drop zone just as much as the bottom line.

How quickly history can change. Málaga fans were cautiously excited Last June when Qatari sheikh Abdullah ben Nasser Al-Thani decided to make shockwaves throughout Spanish football and bring his billions to make a team that perennially was in between divisions for a good portion of their history.

Unlike his other counterparts at Manchester City and at Paris-St. Germain, this project is looking to give sanity to this club. It is much needed sanity at Málaga needed especially after memories of their economic collapse back in 2006 that led to their most recent relegation.

Al-Thani took over with little fanfare. The attention that he did get though was made the status quo establishment quiver as they looked at him as a billionaire looking to invade a league that is in dire need of cash injection.

If you look at this buy, for Al-Thani it was the equivalent of club shopping at Wal-Mart. The amount of money that he bought the club for was equal to one day’s salary (€36 million) for the member of the Qatari royal family.

On The Pitch

Obviously when you have at your disposal the big gun that is usually the first thing you usually reach for. Al-Thani, like his royal family brethren at PSG talked about development, but that rhetoric was quickly left along the wayside.

Málaga’s approach was maintained through half a season at least. There were only two signings made that would end up being lackluster with such immense financial

backing. Banfield’s Sebastián Fernández and Venezuelan youngster José Salomón Rondón would step in; no one would realize the impact these two players would have in the long term.

Jesualdo Ferreira came from Porto with trophies galore but left quickly. He lasted only nine matches and only seven of the first 27 points this past season.

This would allow Manuel Pellegrini to coach yet again. Pellegrini was sacked just months earlier from Real Madrid despite leading the Merengues to club records in wins and points, but would end up in second place to Barcelona.

There was also a deep look taken at some of the players at the club and Al-Thani decided to clean house in order to give Pellegrini a cleaner slate to make his creation.

Add to this the signings of Julio Baptista, Nacho Camacho, Martín De Michelis, and Sergio Asenjo and Málaga would start to take off slowly.

Their off-season has raised eyebrows as well. The squad brig to the fray a good mix of veteran leadership as well as the youngsters that will be doing the dirty work and learning a great deal more in the process. The signing of 35-year-old Ruud Van Nistelrooy is one that can help Rondón truly take off. Sounds scary for me to say that as the native from Caracas became the single-season Venezuelan goalscorer in La Liga. Van Nistlerooy will give the lessons that he will need to truly take that next step.

Former Lyon man Jérémy Toulalan is going to be a promising player coming into this team at the height of his powers. For the past few season he’s been touted as one of the best players in the middle of the park. He will give the stability in the middle that is direly needed in the heart of the pitch.

Dutch international Joris Mathijsen will give a significant presence in the back while Joaquín will develop all types of offense on the right.

The Best Move? The strongest and boldest move had to be the addition of Fernando Hierro to the Boquerón ranks. The former Spanish national team captain and one of the more revered names in Spanish football will make a Real Madrid´s ties become yet stronger with the addition of a quality player and a quality administrator to help guide the team and strengthen the vision of the club’s ownership.

The bench will be rather deep and that will give the team an important edge in the team’s goals, albeit there is still one weak spot.

After having five goalkeepers defend the sticks last season, the club is still in the market for someone to compete for the starting goalkeeper position. This could be an interesting storyline for the summer. Dani Aranzubia was speculated to head in that direction, but the numbers were not agreed upon.

With all this action going on, the South of Spain is going to be mighty heated like never before. For generations, the ultimate goal was to just stay afloat. Now their aspirations are as big as their owner’s back pocket.

Instead of using that option to solve all problems, they are looking to have a sound base in order to not worry about last year’s issues and be able to focus on their other needs- youth academy and the other teams (reserves, and women’s teams). It is the trickle down effect that this model is shaping in that allows

For Al-Thani it is a first step towards something that can have the potential of being rather special. His decisions have been favorable and that has helped prevent the club from having any growth cancelled out by turmoil.

Moreover, his moves have been wise and wasteful has not been part of the team’s strategy unlike Manchester City who they are usually being compared to.

Met de komst van Jérémy Toulalan was er voor het duo weinig uitzicht op speelminuten. De controleur kwam voor tien miljoen euro over van Olympique Lyon.

Santi Cazorla staat op het punt om zijn overgang naar Málaga af te ronden. Villarreal heeft zich langere tijd verzet tegen een verkoop van de vleugelspits, maar lijkt zich nu dan toch neer te leggen bij een overgang.

Villarreal gaat vermoedelijk op korte termijn akkoord met de geboden transfersom van ongeveer twintig miljoen euro, In Duitsland werd de 26-jarige aanvaller zondag nog wel een helft ingezet tegen VfL Wolfsburg (2-2), maar volgens Spaanse media is hij direct daarna afgereisd naar Zuid-Spanje. Daar zou hij de benodigde formaliteiten rond hebben gemaakt.

Cazorla werkte in het verleden bij Villarreal al samen met Manuel Pellegrini, de huidige coach van Málaga. Eerder versterkte de club zich al met gevestigde namen als Ruud van Nistelrooy en Joris Mathijsen. Cazorla is wel de eerste speler voor wie Málaga een astronomisch bedrag over gaat maken. De duurste aankoop was Jérémy Toulalan (Olympique Lyon) met een prijskaartje van tien miljoen euro.

Málaga heeft met Cazorla een selectie van 23 spelers, dit totaal zal worden aangevuld met drie spelers uit de B-kern. Met die groep hoopt de club in de verschillende toernooien de ambitieuze doelstellingen te realiseren.
