According to a statement from Royal Emirates Group, the Dubai investment group owned by Sheikh Butti Bin Suhail Al Maktoum, the company has bought a Spanish La Liga side in the top division and is set to rename them 'Team Dubai'. The team in question is believed to be Real Zaragoza, who are currently having major financial difficulties and are in desperate need of help, but nobody really thought they were that desperate.

Dubai buys Spanish La Liga club, to rename ‘Team Dubai’

Royal Emirates Group, the Dubai investment group chaired by HRH Sheikh Butti Bin Suhail Al Maktoum, has bought a top-league Spanish football team set to be renamed ‘Team Dubai’.

The privately-held firm said in a statement Tuesday that it has taken over ownership of a La Liga – Spain’s premiership league – team in a deal to be announced Thursday.

“The said team will be named as ‘Team Dubai’,” the statement said.

The unnamed club is speculated to be the debt-ridden Spanish club Zaragoza. Spanish media reports in February a Dubai sovereign wealth fund had made a €3m buyout offer for the team.

The deal reportedly included a guarantee to service the club’s debts, taking the value of the transaction to around €130m.

Zaragoza management did not comment on the deal at the time.

Spain’s ‘La Liga’ includes some of the richest teams in the world, including Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Real Madrid and Valencia.

A spokesperson for Royal Emirates Group said the club’s chairman and several high-profile players were due to arrive in Dubai in the next 24-hours.

Je hebt het natuurlijk ook bij die Red Bull clubs gehad, maar dat waren - op Casino Salzburg na - natuurlijk allemaal kleine clubs. Real Zaragoza heeft zelfs een Europa Cup gewonnen. Ik kan het haast ook niet geloven.

Het past in de toenemende commercialisering en amerikanisering van het voetbal. Volgende stap is dat teams gaan verhuizen.

Een naam is maar een naam. Het is het visitekaartje maar de interne cultuur is bij de meeste clubs toch al verkracht (bij sommige oude volksclubs zijn bijv. bepaalde 'sociale' activiteiten volledig gerationaliseerd geraakt en volledig in handen geraakt van de marketingafdeling). Puntje bij paaltje is de cultuur belangrijker dan een naam.

Ook zag de gekke man deze naam aan voor een verwijzing naar de socialistische internationale (ja, hij was gek).

Update: It's not going to be Zaragoza, and apparently 'Team Dubai' is to be an honorific of some sort, according to a statement from the Royal Emirates Group: "It is a Spanish La Liga division side. The team will not be renamed but it will be titled as '[club's name] Team Dubai' in order to deliver the message that Dubai care." I think that might be even worse.

Nee, daar staat dat ze ook aan de overname gelinkt worden maar dat er niks zeker is. Op de site van VI staat nu dit:
