The beginning Het begon allemaal op 4 September 1867 in Sheffield (South Yorkshire), toen bij de toenmalige cricketclub 'the Wednesday Cricket Club' op een vergadering werd besloten om ook voetbal te gaan spelen. In de jaren 80 werden er 2 grotere veranderingen in de club doorgevoerd. In 1882 werden de cricket club en de voetbalclub opgesplitst. De cricket club stopte in 1925 en in 1887 werd Wednesday een professionele voetbalclub. In dat zelfde jaar wonnen ze hun eerste professionele match tegen The Mechanics met 3-0. In dat jaar verhuisde ze van Bramall Lane (waar nu the pig oftewel sheffield united voetballen) naar Olive Grove. Hier speelden ze de openingswedstrijd tegen Blackburn Rovers:

In 1889 richten Wednesday me een paar andere clubs 'Then Football Alliance' op. In het eerste seizoen daar werden ze meteen kampioen en haalden ze in 1890 ook de finale van FA Cup. Die verloren ze overigens wel met 6-1 van Blackburn Rovers. In 1892 werden ze toegelaten tot de 'Football League.

De Roemrijke Jaren '90 In de jaren tachtig en de jaren 90 speelde Wednesday bijna altijd in de hoogste divisie van Engeland. 1990-91 was het enige seizoen in 16 jaar dat Wednesday niet in de hoogste divisie speelden. Dit is toch een van de beste jaren voor de supporters. In '91 werd namelijk de league cup gewonnen en promoverenden ze weer. In de league cup versloegen ze Manchester United in de finale met 1-0. De goal kwam van Sheridan maar de man of the match was toen Nilsson. Dit was de eerste prijs in 50 jaar.

Na de promotie werd Wednesday meteen derde in de hoogste divisie in Engeland. Dit kwam allemaal door het team dat ze toen hadden. Met name spelers als Hirst, Waddle, Sheridan, Nilsson, Anderson, Woods en Palmer zijn de toppers uit de jaren '90. In het seizoen 92-93 ging Wednesday 4 (!!!) keer naar wembley, 1 keer de league cup, 2 keer de FA Cup finale (dit was nog met replay) en de halve finale. Die halve finale word normaal niet in Wembley gespeeld maar omdat we tegen de grote rivalen van united speelde werd dit naat Wembley verplaatst. Dee match tegen united werd gelukkig wel gewonnen met 2-1. Ondanks deze 4 trips naar Wembley werd er dat jaar niets gewonnen. de league en FA cup finales werden beide verloren tegen Arsenal.

De donkere tijden waar maar geen eind aan lijkt te komen. Daarna ging het berg afwaarts met als diepte punt de degradatie naar league one in 2004 waar we gelukkig meteen terug kwamen in 2005 door de play off finale te winnen. 40.000 Wednesday fans gingen naar cardiff en zagen daar Wednesday Hartlepool verslaan met 4-2 waardoor ze weer terug in de Championship. Daar bleven ze spelen en haalden in 2008-2009 een 12 plaats met de beste verdediging van de competitie. In seizoen 2009/2010 werd de toenmalige trainer ontslagen en werd Irvine aangesteld. Die moest ons toen in de Championship proberen te houden. Ik denk zelf dat dit nog steeds een grote fout is geweest. Dit eindigde in een climax dat de meeste mensen hier nog niet hebben gezien. Dit was groter dan de beslissing in de eredivisie op de laatste speeldag van een paar jaar verleden. Wednesday kreeg op de laatste dag van de competitie palace thuis en dit wed de wedstrijd op leven en dood. Wednesday moest winnen. Dit was helaas niet het geval en het werd 2-2. Alleen werd er in de laatste minuut bij een corner afgefloten. Ik zelf denk dat als hij nog genomen was de keeper (Grant) hem erin had gekopt. Dit was niet het geval en nu zitten we weer in league One. De financiele problemen stapelen zich op en ze leven nu nog door de CO-OP bank. Het is alleen afwachten hoe lang dit nog duurt want er zijn meer openstaande rekeningen. Het is hopen op een investeerder. Ze zijn er meebezig maar het is lastig iemand te vinden als je ongeveer 30 miljoen schuld hebt. Er zou iemand zijn die 2 miljoen had gegeven als een gebaar en daarna de club zou overnemen maar daar is niets meer van gehoord.

"Today, Sheffield Wednesday supporters and shareholders have joined forces to send a clear and unequivocal message to the club’s board of directors: ‘You have overseen a unprecedented decline in our club. You have become personally compromised. Go now before you are responsible for the death of SWFC.’ As the clock ticks towards the final chapter of the darkest period in our great club's history, frustration and anger grows amongst fans. The message is clear - investment MUST be completed. The alternative is that Sheffield Wednesday FC will cease to exist on December 1st. If given the chance to succeed, current bids could see SWFC progress with new cash, new ideas and new faces at the helm. At least two parties have made offers reported as acceptable to the bank but, it seems, rejected by the loan note holders. In addition the board of SWFC have rejected a credible plan for help through supporter investment. The fans demand to know why - and yet the club's silence is deafening. As the posturing and jostling for position has unfolded over the last few days a dangerous and harmful conflict of interest has revealed itself at the heart of the investment process. It now seems clear that influential figures within the boardroom who should be considering all alternatives on equal merit have their own personal objectives. Furthermore, their presence in the boardroom throughout the investment process has put them in a position to influence the views of others whilst pursuing their own personal agendas. Perhaps the most serious issue is the emergence of a consortium led by Mick Wright. Board members cannot carry out their fiduciary duty to secure the best available investment for the club if they are attempting to pursue and protect personal interests at the same time. If it is true that one or more of the current board are part of Mr Wright’s consortium, then we should be told. If one or more of the current board have been promised a role on Mr Wright’s board should his takeover succeed, we should be told. We firmly believe the only reasonable course of action is for any Directors who are engaged in discussions around their own personal investments to immediately remove themselves from the decision-making process. For the avoidance of any doubt, and to protect their own integrity, we call upon them to resign their positions with immediate effect. We also call upon Mr Wright to end his de facto, unratified occupation of a seat within the SWFC boardroom. Wednesdayite, Time To Go and the Shareholders Association represent the fans of Sheffield Wednesday and speak for 24% of the club's shareholding. As such, we now insist the club admits an observer representing the fans to all SWFC board meetings from now until investment is completed. Only complete transparency can now remove all doubt about the efforts of the current Board to secure the right investment for the club. As such, we are now both consulting with Supporters Direct and taking professional, specialist legal advice in relation to the issues raised above. In addition, we are also seeking answers to the question of whether the club has been and continues to trade insolvently - and whether the rejection of ANY viable investment proposal in favour of one that might appear in the future is acting both legally and in the interests of SWFC. Investment that could lead to the rebirth of our club must not be ignored or rejected due to the personal interests of those responsible for the stewardship of SWFC. We expect and demand immediate actions from those who appear to have conflicting interests to remove any doubt about their responsibilities by withdrawing and allowing independent scrutiny of the negotiations taking place. If we receive no satisfactory response by the opening of business Monday 22nd November we see little option but to escalate our actions by all means open to us."

Dons v Owls Preview So it's back to concentrating on what this club should be about, football! The Owls travel down to Buckinghamshire to face fellow promotion hopefuls MK Dons in their own back yard. Owls News Off the pitch battles have seen the Owls thrown into chaos but the players have tried to remain professional and they will be hoping to keep the recent upturn in form going. The Owls are without Giles Coke, the former Northampton Town man collected his fifth booking at the weekend and missed out against the Dons. Tommy Miller could switch from the right wing to partner James O'Connor with either Chris Sedgwick or Marcus Tudgay stepping into the breach. Jermaine Johnson and Jon Otsemobor could both return to the squad after their recent injury problems, both are back in full training and maybe named in the squad to travel south at the weekend. Irvine will resist the chance to make too many changes with the Owls racking up three straight wins and with the front two looking a lethal pairing Paul Heffernan's patience of a saint routine must be wearing thin. They stole the identity of Wimbledon FC. They were formed as MK Dons in June 2004, 9 months after Wimbledon were moved to MK. They have played at the National Hockey Stadium for the first three years before moving to stadium:mk in 2007. They play in White and Black at home. No one who loves Football actually likes them. The Ground 22K Capacity bowl like stadium was built in 2007 and is similar to many new builds of the last decade with the difference being an upper tier which has been pre modelled but not yet had seats fixed which would add another 10k to the capacity. Sam's breakthrough season was the 2008/09 campaign and in just the second game of the season he broke his scoring duck in a 1-0 win over Norwich in the League Cup, he would go on to net 13 goals in 35 starts in all competitions. He suffered an injury ravaged 2009/10 season which saw him play just games but he added 7 goals to his tally and this term to date he has 6 in 15. Dean Lewington is the longest serving player at the Dons having moved with the club from London and their Wimbledon days. The flame haired defender has amassed well over 300 appearances for the club during his six plus years as a Dons player. 'Lewie' came through the Wimbledon academy and actually made his debut in a defeat at Hillsborough, he would play just 32 times for Wimbledon until the name and entity change saw them become MK in 2004. He is the current team captain of the club and the son of Ray Lewington. Looking around the squad there are a few recognisable names, the aforementioned Dietmar Hamann who has a Champions League medal to his name, whilst Luke 'the ugliest footballer ever' Chadwick plies his trade with the club, the former Manchester United is now with his 8th club. Other names with local connections include Lewis Guy who had a spell at Doncaster and Peter Leven who was formerly with Chesterfield and lest we forget Michael 'the t**t' McIndoe, the former Barnsley and Doncaster man is a hate figure to many Wednesdayites after his slating of the club in the past, he recently joined on loan after failing at Coventry. Previous Clashes The two sides have met just once before, back in the 2004/05 season, James Quinn fired the Owls into a first half lead with a clever finish before Clive Platt restored parity on 58 minutes, Ben Chorley then deflected a shot into his own net to give the Owls the lead once more but with 5 minutes remaining Izale McLeod continued his impressive scoring streak against the Owls when he levelled matters once again, it made it 3 in 4 for McLeod against Wednesday. Milan Mandaric has struck a deal to take over League One side Sheffield Wednesday, according to Sky Sports News sources. The on-off saga now looks to have ended in agreement for the Serb-born American businessman, who sold his stake in Leicester City earlier this season to a Thailand-based consortium. Mandaric is still chairman of Leicester, but he will now stand down from that role he has held for four years and take on a similar position at Hillsborough. Reports suggest he will keep current Owls chairman Howard Wilkinson and chief executive Nick Parker to make up a new board. Mandaric's buy-out will mean that the club do not have to return to the High Court on Wednesday for yet another winding-up order from HM Revenue and Customs over an unpaid £300,000 VAT bill.

heffield Wednesday PLC ("The Company") Posted on: Mon 29 Nov 2010 The Board of Sheffield Wednesday PLC ("the Board") can confirm that an agreement has been reached to sell Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited ("the Club") to UK Football Investments, LLC ("UKFI"). This agreement is conditional on approval of the Company's shareholders and is part of a wider restructuring package, the completion of which will see the Club emerge from its recent financial troubles debt free. UK Football Investments, LLC is owned by the trustees of the Milan Mandaric 2008 Revocable Trust. The highlights of the agreement are: - UKFI will pay the Company GBP £1 to acquire 100% of the Club - UKFI have entered into an agreement with the Co-Operative Bank which will allow for the Club to move forward free of any residual debt - The current and former Directors other than David Allen who own loan notes in the Company have all agreed to waive a significant majority of the value of their debts, with any repayment of the remaining sum only taking place upon the Club gaining promotion to the Premier League - David Allen will receive an initial payment on completion of the acquisition along with a further payment upon the Club gaining promotion to the Premier League - Upon completion of the deal, Kenneth Cooke, Robert Grierson and Geoffrey Hulley shall resign as directors of both the Company and the Club - The new Board of the Club will consist of Milan Mandaric, who shall serve as Chairman and directors Howard Wilkinson and Nick Parker Shareholders will be asked to approve the sale of the Club to UKFI at an Extraordinary General Meeting, which will take place on 14th December 2010. Further details of this meeting will be sent to shareholders directly. The Board can confirm that it has already received irrevocable undertakings from 43.6% of the company's shareholders to vote in favour of the deal. After reaching this important milestone UKFI, has given the Board written assurances they will pay the outstanding balance of £300,000 that is the subject of a winding up order, brought by HMRC and due to be heard in the High Court on December 1, 2010. In his dealings with the Board Mr Milan Mandaric has also made clear his intention to invest in all aspects of the Club, and that his aim is to see Sheffield Wednesday once again be a force in English football. Commenting on the agreement, Sheffield Wednesday Chairman Howard Wilkinson said, "I believe this to be one of the most important days in the recent history of our great club. Our trials and tribulations have been well documented, but I can now see a brighter future for Sheffield Wednesday. "Our Club has been on the brink of administration, and if this were to happen then so many people around our Club would have suffered. We do have one final hurdle to cross, and that is for shareholders to approve the sale at the upcoming EGM. "I will always be grateful to Milan Mandaric for showing the determination to save Sheffield Wednesday. We have been able to spend some time in recent days speaking about football and what needs to be done here. I look forward to working with Milan in building a strong Club in which we can all be proud. "I would also like to put on record, my thanks and appreciation to the whole staff and supporters of Sheffield Wednesday who have stuck with us through thick and thin. In particular I would like to thank our Chief Executive Nick Parker, who has worked night and day to save Sheffield Wednesday from administration. "In addition, I would like to put on record my sincere thanks to the departing and former directors of the Club who are also the loan note holders. They have served the Club loyally for many years without remuneration and have agreed to suffer a significant financial loss in order to allow this transaction to proceed. Their support throughout the many years of their service should not be doubted. "On behalf of the Board I fully recommend this offer to shareholders, and to our supporters I again call on you to get behind our team." Speaking on reaching this agreement, Milan Mandaric said: "Sheffield Wednesday is one of the most famous names in football. "I give the supporters and everybody who cares for this club, an assurance that if shareholders vote in favour of this deal, then I will do everything in my power, working with Howard, Nick and Alan Irvine to again make Sheffield Wednesday a real force in English football."
