Het uit de hoofdstad van Mallorca (Palma) afkomstige Real Club Deportivo Mallorca werd opgericht in 1919 en eindigde afgelopen seizoen als 5e in de Primera en heeft zich daarmee gekwalificeerd voor de Europa League.

Sinds 1999 speelt Mallorca in het ONO Estadi, dat een capaciteit van 23.100 plaatsen heeft.

The oldest club in the Balearic Islands, Mallorca was originally formed by Adolfo Vázquez, a republican engineer, who named the club Junta Directiva del Alfonso XIII FBC after the then king. The first stadium, inaugurated on 25 March, was called the Buenos Aires, with a match against Barcelona (which Barcelona won 8-0). A year later, the club changed its name to Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII, which remained until the club was renamed in 1931, for political reasons, Club Deportivo Mallorca. In 1949 they were granted royal patronage, allowing them to use the Real prefix.

In 2003, Mallorca won the Copa del Rey for the first time. In its history, the team spent 20 seasons in Primera División, 29 in Segunda División, 2 in Segunda División B and 11 in Tercera División.

Ownership and financial difficulties
It was announced on 22 July 2008, that 96% of the club's shares had been purchased for over GBP50 million by controversial English businessman Paul Davidson. In November 2008 it was revealed that Davidson was unable to complete the deal due to lack of finances, raising questions as to whether his interest was little more than a publicity stunt. On the 19th November 2009, the Spanish businessman Mateo Alemany has purchased Real Mallorca from the Marti-Mingarro family. In May 2010, it was announced that the club had applied to the courts to enter voluntary administration with debts estimated between £42.5m and £51.3m. It was announced on 28 June 2010 that a consortium lead by Llorenç Serra Ferrer had bought the club and the sale was completed in July 2010. However due to the poor financial situation at the club, UEFA decided on 22 July 2010 against granting Mallorca the licence to play in the 2010/2011 UEFA Europa League. Despite the off-field upheavals and financial struggles, Mallorca are enjoying their longest stay in the top flight and the 2010-11 will be their 14th consecutive season in La Liga.

Ik snap niet waarom Mallorca altijd 'Real Mallorca' wordt genoemd in Nederland (maar ook Engeland bijvoorbeeld) en clubs als Espanyol en Deportivo het zonder 'Real' moeten doen. Terwijl zij toch ook 'koninklijk' zijn.

Misschien omdat er anders verwarring met het eiland ontstaat? Ik zou het anders ook niet weten .

Thuis met 2-0 van Sociedad gewonnen, belangrijke overwinning om de aansluiting met de middenmoot niet te verliezen.

IK verwacht ook wel dat ze ergens in de middenmoot zullen eindigen. De prestatie van vorig seizoen was denk ik een uitschieter, maar gelet op de kwaliteit van de selectie hoeven ze ook absoluut niet te vrezen voor degradatie.

De Guzman: "Ik wil naar Villarreal"

Als het aan Jonathan de Guzman ligt, vervolgt hij zijn carrière bij Villarreal. De Spaanse subtopper meldde zich onlangs bij Real Mallorca voor de oud-Feyenoorder, maar een eerste bod werd door de eilandbewoners van tafel geveegd. De Guzman hoopt dat beide partijen de komende periode alsnog tot een akkoord kunnen komen.

Zelf wil De Guzman dolgraag naar Villarreal, zegt hij tegen Voetbal International. "Ik wil naar Villarreal. Vorig jaar kwam ik naar Mallorca om mezelf als voetballer verder te ontwikkelen. Als dan na één seizoen Villarreal zich meldt, vind ik dat ik moet gaan."

"Toen ik nog bij Feyenoord speelde was het mijn droom bij een Spaanse topclub terecht te komen. Door twee zware knieblessures heb ik tijd verloren, maar die ambitie is altijd rechtovereind blijven staan. Villarreal is een topclub die bekend staat om het verzorgde voetbal dat ze spelen. Voor mij komt die club op het juiste moment", aldus De Guzman, die met Villarreal mogelijk in de Champions League kan spelen. "Daar is het me ook om te doen. Met geld heeft het niks te maken."

Hij heeft begrip voor de houding van Mallorca. "Dat Real me niet graag wil laten gaan, begrijp ik. Ik ben de club ook veel dank verschuldigd. Na mijn periode bij Feyenoord was Real Mallorca de beste club die ik me kon wensen. Ik heb er de kans gekregen en ben er een betere speler geworden, ook doordat veel in mezelf heb geïnvesteerd. Mallorca was geweldig, alleen is het nu wel tijd voor een stap hogerop."
