Clubgeschiedenis

Before Serie A Cagliari became the first ever out-right champions of Serie C during the 1951–52 season, prior to that in the league the championship was shared amongst more than one team. They spent the 1950s from then on in Serie B, losing a promotion play-off in 1954. After descending to Serie C in the early 1960s, Cagliari's rise would be meteoric- eventually achieving promotion to Serie A in 1964. First Serie A adventure: 1964–1976 The squad for the Rossoblu's debut season in Serie A featured players like defender Mario Martiradonna, midfielders Pierluigi Cera and Ricciotti Greatti, and forward Luigi Riva. A poor first half of the season saw Cagliari in last place with 9 points at the halfway mark. An astonishing second half of the season saw Cagliari defeat the likes of Juventus and Milan and finish in 7th place with 34 points. Two seasons later Riva finished Serie A top scorer for the first time while Cagliari finished with the league's best defensive record. During the summer of 1967, Cagliari played a season in North America as part of a fledgling league called the United Soccer Association. This league from Europe and South America to play in American and Canadian cities, with each club bearing a local name. Cagliari played as the Chicago Mustangs, and finished joint second in the league's Western Division with 13 points, two behind the division champion and eventual league champion Los Angeles Wolves. The league's leading scorer was Chicago/Cagliari's Roberto Boninsegna, who scored 10 goals while playing in 9 of the team's 12 games. Cagliari first emerged as serious Serie A title contenders in 1968–69 with a three-horse race involving them, Fiorentina and Milan. Fiorentina would win the league, but the following season would bring ultimate glory. With Angelo Domenghini joining the side, Cagliari would win the title in 1970 with only two games lost, 11 goals conceded (the fewest in any major European league to date) and Riva as league top scorer once more. Players like Cera, Domenghini and Riva played in Italy's 1970 World Cup Final team. The 1970s would see a gradual decline (though were title contenders two years after their one and only scudetto win) Cagliari were finally relegated in 1976 with Riva's career having effectively ended during that season. Up and down again: 1976–87 After relegation, Cagliari lost a play-off for promotion the following season and would return to Serie A in 1979. Players like Franco Selvaggi, Mario Brugnera (a survivor of the 1970 team) and Alberto Marchetti ensured a respectable four-year stay in the top flight before a second relegation in 1983. The 80s would then prove to be a darker time compared to the previous two decades with relegation to Serie C1 in 1987. [edit] There and back: 1987–2000 Cagliari spent two seasons in Serie C1. In the first one it barely avoided relegation in Serie C2. In 1988, Claudio Ranieri was appointed coach, and led the team to two successive promotions, to Serie B in 1989 and to Serie A in 1990. The first two seasons back in Serie A saw Cagliari fight relegation, with safety being achieved by excellent second half runs. But season 1992–93 would see Cagliari fight for a European place and succeed under the management of Carlo Mazzone. The following season saw a run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, unprecedented for the Sardinian club. The next few years would see Cagliari return to mid-table anonymity, before a struggle in 1996–97 saw Cagliari relegated after losing a play-off to Piacenza. Once more they bounced back after just one year, but their next stay in Serie A lasted just two seasons. Once and again: 2000 onwards Cagliari spent the next four seasons in Serie B, for most part in mid-table mediocrity. But 2003–04 would see the Rossoblu, led by Sardinian-born Gianfranco Zola, mount a successful promotion challenge and the following season saw Cagliari hold their own in Serie A with a respectable mid-table finish. The following season was a quiet one for the Sardinians, that obtained a good mid-table position (12th place). The 2005–06 season, the first without Zola, started in the worst way possible for Cagliari, which changed its manager for three times, with Attilio Tesser, Daniele Arrigoni and Davide Ballardini alternating to the position of coach, before Nedo Sonetti, appointed in November, who was able to save the team from a relegation also thanks to goals of Honduran striker David Suazo. For the 2006–2007 season, Marco Giampaolo was signed as head coach, however he was fired after the 17th matchday and replaced by Franco Colomba. However, after a number of poor performances ending in a 2–0 home defeat to Lazio, Colomba was sacked, and chairman Cellino chose to reinstate Giampaolo as head coach. Giampaolo was confirmed for the 2007–08 season, and his contract was extended for two more years. The 2007–08 season saw the flagship strikers David Suazo, Esposito and Langella leave for Internazionale, Roma and Atalanta respectively, and the experienced goalkeeper Chimenti leave for Udinese. The club reinforced itself with youngsters likes Acquafresca, Matri, Foggia, Argentine Larrivey and Slovenian Koprivec . Nedo Sonetti returned to coach the Rossoblu in November 2007 after Giampaolo was relieved of his duties as a result of poor results in the first part of the 2007–08 Serie A season that saw them sink to the bottom of the Serie A standings. In the January transfer window, Cagliari made changes to their squad with goalkeepers Vincenzo Marruocco and Marco Fortin replaced by Marco Storari and Luca Capecchi, along with experienced striker Jeda, and the Sardinian midfielder Andrea Cossu. With these new players Cagliari won many matches and continued their climb up the table eventually ending the season at 14th. The 2008–09 season saw Cagliari start their season badly losing their first 5 matches. However, despite their rough start, they went on to end the season at a comfortable 9th place, 19 points above relegation.

Club Focus - Cagliari - 2010/11 season preview By Jack Alexandros Cagliari is/are recovering this summer after brilliant young coach Massimiliano Allegri departed to Milan. Following several seasons of overachievement under Allegri, the club now aims for more than their solitary target of survival in Serie A. Last season: Usually this would be enough to appease the fans but strangely last season’s 14th placed finish was slightly disappointing in hindsight. The Isolani were left to wonder what might have been when they suffered a desperately poor end to their campaign with a winless run in their last 13 games. An adventurous side with the ability to counter-attack at speed, Cagliari created ample chances to win games on a regular basis. Despite this, they lacked the killer instinct or the ability to score in an ugly fashion. The squad 2010 summer transfer campaign: The main change for the Rossoblu this campaign has been the departure of Coach Allegri. The club replaced him swiftly with Pierpaolo Bisoli. Inevitably, Sampdoria recalled their Azzurrini midfielder Daniele Dessena after a successful loan spell last season but fellow Azzurrini international, Lorenzo Ariaudo, rejoined on a co-ownership deal from Juventus. Throughout the summer there has been constant speculation linking the club’s best players with moves away. Despite this, Federico Marchetti, Andrea Cossu, Andrea Lazzari and Alessandro Matri remain with the club. The Coach: Ex-Cagliari player Bisoli, 43, will be Allegri’s successor. He has a wealth of experience in the lower divisions of Italian football. He achieved back-to-back play-off finishes with Umbrian minnows Foligno in Serie C1, and later won the championship in the same division with current Serie A new boys Cesena. Last season he followed up that championship success by guiding the Bianconeri to a 2nd place finish and a return to Serie A after 19 years away. In his own words Bisoli described his sides as possessing “commitment, group cohesion and passion Anchorman: Central midfielder Davide Biondini had his influence recognised with an Azzurri call-up last season. Biondini is very distinctive due to his long ginger hair, and is just as renowned for covering every blade of grass on the pitch. Now one of the first names on the teamsheet. Cossu possesses beautiful balance and the ability to hold on to the ball when harassed by the opposition snapping at his heels. A breakthrough year in 2009/10 led to a call up for the initial Italian World Cup squad and at one point a move to Barcelona was mooted. Hot prospect: The best young prospect for the Isolani is Lorenzo Ariaudo, a member of the Italy U-21 side. A cultured centre-back who enjoyed a loan spell in the 2nd half of last season. 2010/11 prediction: Cagliari must improve on last year’s 14th place finish. At times last season they showed a top half of the table placing was capable and this should be the case this time around. Cagliari possesses creativity and flair from Cossu and Lazzari, as well as the predatory instincts of Matri, Jeda and Nenê – all that is needed is a sense of organisation and toughness. Nou, ik ben 5 km van Cagliari geboren in een dorpje genaamd Donori , maar was 6 toen ik hier aankwam en ben sindsdien natuurlijk vaak op familiebezoek geweest en om vakantie vieren . Heb wel en Cagliari sjaal , maar helaas vielen mijn vakanties nooit gedurende de competitie .

Ik ben er 1 keer heel dichtbij geweest en had al kaartjes in december was dat en je gelooft het niet , maar werd afgelast door sneeuw !

Cagliari is echt een prachtige stad en de stranden ( niet bij Cagliari ) zijn van wereldfaam .

However, Marchetti also pulled out with a muscular problem and will not be making the trip to London. Instead, new Coach Prandelli gave Mirante his debut senior Azzurri call for the friendly at Upton Park. The 27-year-old shot-stopper receives his first senior call-up. He had six calls for the Under-21 side, most recently in 2006, but never played. Marchetti is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Cagliari, who have put him on the market. Acquafresca joins Cagliari Wednesday 11 August, 2010 Genoa have confirmed that striker Robert Acquafresca will return to Cagliari in a deal to be completed “by the end of the week.” The forward had been linked with a comeback after disappointing spells at Marassi and Atalanta. “The signs converge in the direction of a transfer to be completed soon,” reads a note on the official Genoa website. Probably it will be done by the end of the week. Between Thursday and Friday a meeting is set between the directors of the two clubs to clear the way for his passage to the Sardinian side. “Contracts will be signed and deposited with the Lega Calcio.” The player has already been given permission to leave pre-season training and join his new Cagliari teammates. Acquafresca had the best years of his career at Cagliari from 2007 to 2009, when he was in a co-ownership deal with Inter. Cellino attacks the big clubs Cagliari President Massimo Cellino has attacked Italy's big clubs for complaining about the standard of refereeing in Serie A. Cellino had Roma in particular in his sights following Wednesday night's game against Brescia after which they were quite justifiably furious with the match officials. “The big teams are badly accustomed,” he said. “They won thanks to the referees and now that these officials are finally refereeing well for everyone, they start to complain. We have never complained about the referees even if in the past we suffered from their mistakes. The big teams should shut up and think about spending, and buying players rather than having a go at the referees,” he concluded.

Bisoli's job is on the line This weekend's clash with Chievo could already decide Pierpaolo Bisoli's future at Cagliari, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The 43-year-old has only lost one match in his debut campaign in Serie A, and that came against Juventus at the weekend. Cagliari currently sit comfortably in mid-table, the highlight of their season being a 5-1 victory over Roma in Week 2. However, La Gazzetta understands Bisoli's innovative methods have lost him the dressing room and that the old guard in particular is unhappy, especially given his tacit support for Massimo Cellino's decision to freeze Italy international goalkeeper Federico Marchetti out of the squad. Rather than standing by his man, Cellino is apparently preparing to bring back Davide Ballardini for a third stint in charge at Sant'Elia. However, Ballardini is still on Lazio's payroll after being dismissed last season and Cellino will have to go cap in hand to Claudio Lotito, one of his big enemies in the Italian game.

Cellino denies racist chants Cagliari President Massimo Cellino insists there was “a mistake” when the referee stopped play for racist chanting. The 1-0 defeat to Inter was only six minutes old when referee Paolo Tagliavento called a halt to proceedings and ordered a message over the tannoy system urging supporters to stop racist chants from the stands. “I didn’t hear any such chants. I absolutely did not hear them,” said President Cellino, who was at the Stadio Sant’Elia. “At Cagliari we have never been racist. I think there must’ve been a mistake.” Samuel Eto’o was apparently the target of the chants and he scored the winning goal. “Perhaps Cagliari even deserved to win considering the number of chances, but if I had paid my ticket today then I’d have asked for a refund. “There was no verve and I’d never want to see a game like that again. The players lacked the right determination. “I had no problem with Pierpaolo Bisoli’s tactics and it wasn’t his fault. We still have some issues finding our grit.”

Marchetti takes Cagliari to court Italy goalkeeper Federico Marchetti has officially taken legal action against Cagliari in a bid to break free from his contract. The shot-stopper, who played in the 2010 World Cup, has been frozen out of the squad since the summer after he gave an interview declaring he had ambitions beyond this club. Now Marchetti and agent Giuseppe Bozzo have started legal action with a protest to the Lega Calcio, accusing Cagliari of ‘bullying’ in the workplace. It is the same process that allowed Goran Pandev to free himself from his Lazio contract and join Inter in January. Up until two weeks ago, Marchetti had not been allowed to train with his teammates. He was brought back for a friendly game against a local side, but it has become clear he is third choice and won’t be played in an official match unless there is an emergency. Marchetti is also reportedly seeking damages for the six months he has spent on the sidelines at the peak of his career, as the club rejected bids in the summer. “If anyone deserves money in damages then it is me, as I had to buy another goalkeeper,” slammed President Massimo Cellino. “Cagliari cannot be accused of bullying, as we are allowing him to train regularly and giving him the chance to fight for his place.”

Cagliari: No Lazio bid for Marchetti

Cagliari have not been in talks with Lazio regarding the sale of goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.

It is understood that the ‘keeper has agreed personal terms with the capital club, but Lazio have yet to make a bid.

“There have been no negotiations with Lazio for Marchetti,” President Massimo Cellino told Gr Parlamento.

“Marchetti is in a situation that needs to be clarified before June 11, before the side meet up for pre-season training.”

One possible reason why Lazio have not been in contact with the Sardinian outfit could be to do with Marchetti’s contract situation.

The 2010 World Cup winner has a €5.2m release clause inserted into his contract which means he could join any Italian side who agree to pay that figure.

Lazio, who are set to lose Fernando Muslera, need a new goalkeeper and Marchetti is available after being frozen out of the Cagliari side in the past campaign.

Cellino also added that Robert Acquafresca could be sold, while he insisted that he’d try to keep Davide Astori at the club. The latter is part-owned with Milan.

Cagliari make Barreto U-turn

Serie A side Cagliari have seemingly pulled out of the race to sign Paulo Vitor Barreto from Udinese.

Cagliari chief Massimo Cellino recently claimed that an agreement had been reached with Udinese and they just had to finalise personal terms.

However, some weeks have now passed and a report in La Nuova Sardegna claims the outfit are no longer interested in the forward.

Barreto returned to Udine this summer after spending the last three seasons at Bari where he scored 41 goals in 77 League games.
