Unione Sportiva Città di Palermo staat primair bekend om zin voor een voetbalclub zeer ongebruikelijke roze shirts. Palermo is echter meer dan dat. De club uit de hoofdstad van Sicilië is de laatste jaren uitgegroeid tot een stabiele subtopper in de Serie A. Na de promotie in 2004 eindigde club achtereenvolgens als 6e, 8e (officieel als 5e na het aanpassen van de stand i.v.m. het Calciopoli-schandaal), 5e, 11e, 8e en 5e. Vanwege de 5e plek i het afgelopen seioen mag Palermo komend najaar aantreden in de Europa League. De laatste jaren in de Serie A zijn tevens de meest succesvolle uit de clubgeschiedenis. Na lange tijd het Italiaanse equivalent van de heen-en-weer te zijn geweest leek de club na de degradatie uit de Serie A in 1973 definitief weggezakt in het moeras van de lagere divisies. De overname door (de omstreden) Maurizio Zamparini bracht Palermo echter succes. In 2004 promoveerde de club onder leiding van Francesco Guidolin naar de Serie A, om daar dus uit te groeien tot een subtopper. In de kampioensselectie van Italië bij het WK van 2006 waren maar liefst vier spelers van Palermo vertegenwoordigd: Fabio Grosso, Andrea Barzagli, Cristian Zaccardo en Simone Barone. Ook oud-Palermospeler Luca Toni maakte deel uit van de selectie.

Palermo speelt zijn thuiswedstrijden in het Stadio Renzo Barbera. Tijdens het WK 1990 speelde Oranje in dit stadion tegen Egypte en Ierland.

Club Focus - Palermo - 2010/11 season preview By Ben Moody After narrowly missing out on fourth place to Sampdoria, the Rosanero will once again be targeting a Champions League spot as the Zamparini revolution marches on. Last Season: It was a campaign of two half’s, or rather, two head-coaches. After poaching Walter Zenga from arch-rivals Catania there was a sense of optimism around North Sicily. This sense of buoyancy was quickly deflated as Zenga was fired after only 13 games. In came Delio Rossi, who integrated the clubs youngsters into the first team, which quickly turned their fortunes around on the back of a marvellous home record. The Squad 2010 summer transfer campaign: The clubs failure to make the Champions League, meant that the Rosanero where resigned to losing star players such as Simon Kjaer. The Danish international followed in the footsteps of other first XI players such as Cavani and Simplicio who left the club for Napoli and Roma respectively. In search of potential replacements Zamparini has continued his tendency to look towards young players and has signed the talented teenage central defender Munoz from Boca, along with Swiss teenage midfielder Kasami. The young duo are part of Palermo’s long term strategy and are unlikely to be thrust in to the starting line-up straight away. This has led to coach Rossi asking for first-team ready signings, thereby not relying on last year’s back-ups. The Coach: Delio Rossi was the catalyst for Palermo’s resurgence last season and will be hoping to carry that into this season as well. He favours a diamond formation and puts a lot of faith in his younger players, which served him well in the last campaign. Anchorman: Salvatore Sirigu established himself under Rossi last season as the No 1. Only 23, he has been hailed as the new Gigi Buffon, which hasn’t hindered him yet. He organises the defence well and is a fantastic shot-stopper. Sirigu represents the future of Italian goalkeeping. He could be integral part of the Sicilian clubs challenge for honours this season. Playmaker: The clubs rejection of Real Madrid’s 25m bid for Javier Pastore could prove to be the shrewdest piece of business in Serie A this summer. He is the heartbeat of Palermo’s creative flow. Playing at the top of the diamond he can distribute and finish with equal aplomb. It was a real coup to keep him at the Renzo Barbera this season. Hot Prospect: A reason why Cavani may not be such a big loss is that his fellow countryman Abel Hernandez looks more than capable of filling his shoes. He is more of a natural finisher than Cavani but is still not as polished, as you would expect from a relative youngster. 2010/11 prediction: With big money sales of Kjaer and Cavani, there is cash to spend and a significant amount of time before the transfer window closes. The Rosanero have yet to strengthen their squad and it is looking increasingly likely that they will look towards their youngsters to fill the void left by their high profile departures. A good start to the season will be crucial if they are to be successful in their quest for Champions League football. Palermo reject Ferdinand claim Friday 13 August, 2010 Serie A side Palermo have rejected rumours that they are targeting Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand. Stories emanating from England yesterday suggested that the Italian club were assessing a bid for the brother of Manchester United’s Rio. However, Rosanero chief Maurizio Zamparini has rubbished the suggestion when asked about the whisper. “It’s all false,” Zampa declared. “After all, the defence is a department of the team that we no longer need to look at.” Although the Stadio Barbera outfit sold Simon Kjaer to Wolfsburg in the summer, they have signed Ezequiel Munoz from Boca Juniors.

Palermo are Team Yacob Saturday 14 August, 2010 It’s rumoured that Palermo will be signing Argentine sensation Claudio Yacob from Racing Avellaneda next week. The 23-year-old is set to arrive at a cost of €5m after the Rosanero beat off competition from the likes of Napoli. He won the Under-20 World Cup with Argentina in 2007 and is a talented midfielder who’ll add to the growing ranks of South Americans in the side. Yacob has the same agent as Palermo stars Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Munoz. “It’s true there is interest from Palermo, but there are other European clubs tracking him too,” said Marcelo Simonian. “Napoli had wanted him a few months ago, but he preferred to finish the Clausura tournament with Racing. The Rosanero have been keeping an eye on Yacob for some time and they have asked for details, but I cannot say at this point whether they are a step ahead of the rest.” According to Il Giornale di Sicilia, a deal has effectively been done and should be made official on Monday. “He may be young, but he is very physical, excellent at winning back the ball, has great technique and also character. Palermo eye Maribor pair Sunday 22 August, 2010 Palermo are shopping among their Europa League opponents, aiming to snap up Maribor stars Josip Ilicic and Armin Bacinovic. The Rosanero earned a 3-0 first leg victory in the play-off this week, but despite the scoreline had problems against the 10-man Slovenians. According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, the Sicilians were so impressed that they are lining up a double swoop for their players. The main target is 22-year-old Ilicic, a winger who continually troubled the Palermo defence. He could be joined by 21-year-old midfielder Bacinovic, who has been offered a five-year contract. The transfers would only be completed after the second leg of their Europa League play-off.
