The club was founded in 1893 by Monteiro da Costa. The original stadium still exists (the field of constitution), currently serving the formation of the club, under the name Dragon Force.

FC Porto's nickname, "Dragões" (Dragons), as well as the name of their stadium, Estádio do Dragão (Dragon's Stadium), is related to the club's coat of arms. Until 1922 the club's emblem was a blue football with the letters FCP in white. That year, one of the club's players thought of combining that emblem with the city of Porto's coat of arms at the time. These arms, given by Queen Maria II in 1837 (subsequently altered in 1940), had a quartered shield, showing in the first and fourth quarter the arms of Portugal, and in the second and third quarter the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The crest of the Royal House of Portugal was a dragon holding the motto "Invicta" (undefeated), surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Tower and the Sword, Portugal's highest honour, bestowed on the city by the queen after the undefeated siege of July 1832-August 1833. Still today the official titles of the city of Porto are: "Antiga, Mui Nobre, Sempre Leal e Invicta" (ancient, very noble, always loyal and undefeated), and to this date, the city is often referred to in Portugal as "a (cidade) Invicta" (the undefeated [city]). The colours of the club may likewise be inspired by the historical colours of Portugal: until the overthrow of the Monarchy in 1910, the Portuguese flag was blue and white (instead of the modern green and red) with the coat of arms of Portugal in the centre, crowned by a royal crown.

Goias set price for Porto target Rafael Toloi Brazilian club Goias have confirmed that FC Porto have an interest in their under-20 international central defender Rafael Toloi. Porto are widely known to be in the market for additions to the backline following the sale of Bruno Alves to Zenit Saint-Petersburg earlier this week. The Dragons have been strongly linked to Braga’s Alberto Rodriguez, but 19-year-old prospect Rafael Toloi has also emerged as a potential reinforcement for Andre Villas Boas’ squad. “I can confirm that there has been contact, not directly between ourselves and the leaders of FC Porto, but through the player’s representatives,“ Goias sporting director Marcelo Seguardo told Record. “We have 50% of the player’s rights. We value the player at €8m.” One possible factor that could facilitate a move to Portugal is the identity of Rafael Toloi’s representative, who owns the other half of the defender’s rights. Juan Figer is an agent extremely familiar to Porto, having moved former Internacional striker Walter to the Dragao in a protracted transfer last month. Porto’s primary target for the position was Goias stopper Rafael Toloi, but that move appears to have broken down in recent days. Therefore, the Dragons have turned their attention to Otamendi, who represented Argentina in the World Cup in South Africa. Various reports in Portugal on Wednesday morning claimed that a delegation from Porto had been dispatched to Buenos Aires in order to broker a deal for the 22-year-old. “We know that FC Porto has sent people here to Argentina,” Velez vice president Miguel Calello told Maisfutebol. “For us, this is preferable because we like to negotiate directly. However, for now, I can assure you that we have not arranged a meeting. “When they arrive, we will talk. I do not want to talk about numbers. Until now, the only offer we have had came from Zaragoza, which was rejected. Porto beat Braga in five-goal thriller In an electric match replete with superb goals FC Porto twice came from behind to beat Braga and go four points clear at the top of the table. Brilliant long-range efforts from Luis Aguiar and Lima twice put the Arsenalistas ahead, but a Varela brace and another goal from man-of-the-match Hulk left the majority of the huge crowd at the Estadio do Dragao celebrating. If any doubts persisted that Domingos Paciencia’s side can be counted as genuine title candidates, they were surely dissipated tonight. Braga often looked the more composed team, especially in the first half, but were ultimately undone by the individual brilliance of Porto’s star men, in particular Hulk. Unplayable The Brazilian, not for the first time this season, stamped his authority on the game with a mesmerising display of wonderful footwork, searing acceleration and thunderous shooting. Add frightening speed and power into the mix, and we have the ingredients of a footballer who is simply unplayable at times. Another brilliant piece of skill by Hulk saw him shake off three defenders, but as he looked set to score Felipe stuck out his right arm and produced an excellent stop. Moments later Braga went back into the lead as Lima struck a rocket of a shot from 30 yards out that flashed past Helton and almost ripped the net from its frame. The former Belenenses player must wish he could play Porto every week, having notched three goals against the same opposition last season.

De Draken bleken zaterdagavond op eigen veld met 2-0 te sterk voor SC Olhanense en voerden zo hun puntentotaal op tot achttien. Nicolas Otamendi en Hulk maakten voor rust de doelpunten van Porto, dat een ruime voorsprong op de concurrentie koestert. FC Porto verder met succescoach Villas-Boas

FC Porto zet de samenwerking met trainer André Villas-Boas voort. Beide partijen hebben overeenstemming bereikt over een nieuw contract, tot medio 2013.

De pas 33-jarige Villas-Boas trad afgelopen zomer in dienst bij FC Porto en behaalde in zijn eerste maanden zeer goede resultaten. FC Porto staat ruim aan kop in de Portugese liga en bereikte probleemloos de volgende ronde van de Europa League.

Villas-Boas is een volgeling van José Mourinho. De Portugees werkte bij FC Porto, Chelsea en Internationale samen met zijn landgenoot. Met Mourinho en Villas-Boas aan het roer won FC Porto in 2004 zeer verrassend de Champions League.

Porto spekt opnieuw kas Santos met miljoenentransfer

FC Porto heeft opnieuw een jonge Braziliaan overgenomen van Santos. In navolging van middenvelder Danilo (20) werd linksback Alex Sandro (20) vastgelegd.

Sandro tekende een vijfjarige verbintenis bij de Portugese titelhouder. Met de transfer is 9,6 miljoen euro gemoeid. Ook voor Danilo moest Porto diep in de buidel tasten. Hij kostte de club liefst dertien miljoen euro.

Sandro – die zich momenteel met Brazilië Onder-20 voorbereidt op het WK in Colombia – won met Santos in het afgelopen seizoen de Copa Libertadores, het Zuid-Amerikaanse equivalent van de Champions League. Danilo was op dat toernooi een van de uitblinkers.

Porto maakte bekend dat de transferclausule in het contract van Sandro vijftig miljoen euro bedraagt. Behalve de landstitel veroverde Porto in het afgelopen seizoen ook de beker en de Europa League. Dat moest de succesvolle club wel bekopen met het vertrek van coach André Villas-Boas. Hij is nu manager bij Chelsea.
