Benfica is de grootste en populairste club van Portugal. Sinds de oprichting in 1904 werden de adelaars maar liefst 35 maal kampioen van Portugal en de Portugese beker werd 24 keer gewonnen. De grootste successen werden begin jaren zestig geboekt: in 1961 en 1962 werd de Europa Cup I gewonnen. In 1961 werd Barcelona in de finale in Bern verslagen, in 1962 werd in de finale in het Olympisch Stadion van Amsterdam Real Madrid met 5-3 verslagen. In 1965, 1988 (verlies tegen PSV) en 1990 werdde finale van de Europa Cup I verloren. De laatste decennia is de club voorbijgestreefd door FC Porto, maar het afgelopen seizoen werd Benfica eindelijk weer de beste van Portugal en dus mag het zich op gaan maken voor de Champions League.

Ramires van Benfica naar Chelsea De Braziliaanse middenvelder Ramires verruilt Benfica voor Chelsea. De Londense club zou 22 miljoen euro overmaken aan de Portugese club als de international (15 caps) de medische keuring goed doorstaat. Ramires maakte onderdeel uit van de Braziliaanse selectie op het WK in Zuid-Afrika. Voor de wedstrijd tegen Nederland in de kwartfinales was hij geschorst. The controversial 23-year-old has been rumoured to be wanting to leave Marseille in hopes of seeking first team football as the French international rarely plays a full 90 minutes and his role has been that of a supersub under Didier Deschamps. It has been reported that the former Lyon player would be available for as little as 8 million euros and that would certainly fit into Benfica's budget as the club are looking for a replacement for the Chelsea bound Ramires. No word has come from either side as to whether the two are negotiationg the attacking midfielder, but the player's agent Michel Ouzare sees the Portuguese giants as a favourable locale. "I cannot comment. Officially, there is nothing, but a young player with the potential that Ben Arfa has is being sought after by various clubs," stated the FIFA representative. "We are calm that the situation will become resolved soon. As it's obvious, a club that participates in the Champions League like Benfica is interesting." The Lisbon outfit are not the only club in the running for the Frenchman as AC Milan, Parma, Genoa and Hoffenheim have all been linked with the Marseille forward.

Danilo Pereira makes Parma move Midfielder refused to re-sign with Benfica. Benfica have sold another of their players, this time by force, as Danilo Pereira is going to try his luck in Italy with Parma AC. The 18-year-old was in Benfica's youth ranks and had entered the final year of his contract, but decided to up and leave the club due to the overtures of Serie A, despite the Portuguese side very much wanting to retain the youngster. Parma were not the only club interested in the Guinea-Bissau-born player as the likes of Juventus, AC Milan, Udinese and Fiorentina were all believed to be keen on Pereira. The Lisbon club will get very little compenation from the transfer as Benfica are set to receive only 150 000 euros. Pereira signs a five-year contract with his new employers.

Benfica hits back at proposed suspension It is the fight that will not go away as Benfica have lashed out on the proposition that they will be suspended from all of the Liga's activities for the next five years should they go through with their threat to withdraw from the Carlsberg Cup. The Aguias announced two days ago that they were imposing several forms of sanctions against the entire league in protest at the officiating that they have been receiving thus far in the Liga ZON Sagres. The Liga retorted the Lisbon's club's ideas by outlining the rules and regulations, saying they would pay a dear price for, at least one of the club's proposed threats - removing themselves from the League Cup. The Liga stated that the club could face a five-year suspension from all Liga activities and 100 000 euro fine for such an action. Benfica have come out swinging and reminded the Liga that the League Cup is actually not under the Liga's jurisdiction and therefore the ban would not apply. The Portuguese giants have stated that the Liga, along with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), is only responsible for the Liga ZON Sagres and Liga Orangina as per Decree Law No 303/99. The club goes further and states that the law is further backed by the Supreme Council of Sport as per Article 4 which was set on February 28, 2000 - seven years prior to the competition being launched. What this means is that the Carlsberg Cup has not been approved by the Supreme Council of Sport as a mandatory competition as it was never sumbitted by the FPF to make it so. Therefore, Benfica would be immune to the ban suggested by the Liga. The matter is far from being resolved, but at the moment Benfica appear to hold the advantage and have put the ball back in the Liga's court.

Milan offer €20m for David Luiz Portuguese media claim Milan are prepared to offer €20m for Benfica defender David Luiz, but there are cheaper alternatives. The 23-year-old centre-back is known to be a target for the Rossoneri and, according to A’Bola, the club is lining up an audacious bid. Luiz is Brazilian and could well form the defensive partnership of the future with Thiago Silva (pictured). Milan are known for seeking a bargain, though, so he may well be considered too expensive. Other alternatives include 21-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star Mamadou Sakho, according to the Corriere dello Sport. Cagliari’s 25-year-old Michele Canini is another option.

"I don't know what Benfica's objectives are, but if the club wants him to return earlier, it's possible that Vasco will free themselves from this compromise." Benfica breidt aanval uit met twee aanwinsten

Benfica heeft zich voor komend seizoen verzekerd van de diensten van Nolito en Rodrigo Mora. De twee aanvallers komen over van respectievelijk FC Barcelona en Defensor Sporting (Uruguay).

Dat meldt Benfica op de eigen website. Nolito (24) was transfervrij nadat zijn contract bij FC Barcelona was afgelopen. Bij de Spaanse topclub speelde hij twee jaar in het B-team. Daarnaast kwam hij twee keer in actie voor het 'grote' FC Barcelona.

Mora (23), scoorde in het seizoen 2010/2011 elf keer in vijftien competitiewedstrijden voor Defensor Sporting. "Benfica is een grote club in Europa en een van de grootste ter wereld. Ik ben erg trots om hier te zijn", reageert de nieuwkomer.

Benfica legde eerder al Daniel Wass, Nuno Coelho, Artur en Bruno César vast. Later deze maand begint de Portugese club aan het seizoen met de derde kwalificatieronde van de Champions League.

Standard Luik dreigt Alex Witsel deze zomer kwijt te raken aan een buitenlandse club. Voor de middenvelder zou er een vijfjarig contract klaarliggen bij Benfica, zo meldt de Portugese pers.

Witsel zou op jaarbasis een miljoen euro kunnen opstrijken bij Benfica. Volgens Standard-directeur Pierre François is er van een doorbraak nog geen sprake "We zullen Axel alleen laten gaan als er een bod wordt gedaan conform de kwaliteiten van de speler. Zo niet, zouden wij Witsel zeker nog houden tot in januari", vertelt hij aan Het Nieuwsblad.

Capdevila voor twee jaar naar Benfica

Joan Capdevila speelt de komende twee seizoenen voor Benfica. Dat maakte de Portugese topclub donderdag bekend. Capdevila (33) komt over van Villarreal en is bij Benfica de opvolger van Fábio Coentrão.

De Spaanse linksback veroverde met de nationale ploeg in 2008 de Europese titel en pakte vorig jaar in Zuid-Afrika ook de wereldtitel. In zijn contract bij Benfica is een gelimiteerde afkoopsom van twintig miljoen euro opgenomen.

Capdevila, meervoudig international van Spanje, mocht ondanks een doorlopend contract transfervrij vertrekken bij Villarreal. Bij de Spaanse club verloor de verdediger vorig seizoen zijn basisplaats.
