Het in 1893 opgerichte Genoa is één van de oudste voetbalclubs van Italië. Oorspronkelijk opgericht als cricketclub (vandaar dat de club nog steeds Genoa Cricket & Football Club heet) werd in 1897 de voetbalafdeling in het leven geroepen. Een jaar later al werd de club voor het eerst Italiaans kampioen, een prestatie die in 1899, 1900, 1902, 1903 en 1904 herhaald werd. Ook in 1915, 1922 en 1924 kon de kampioensvlag en er kan dan ook met recht gezegd worden dat Genoa in de eerste decennia van het Italiaanse voetbal een dominante plaats innam. Dit veranderde na de invoering van de Serie A in 1929. in 1930 werd de club nog tweede, maar daarna zakte de club langzaam weg. Wel werd in 1937 nog de Coppa Italia veroverd.

Hoewel de club in de eerste decennia na de Tweede Wereldoorlog meestal in de Serie A uitkwam degradeerde Genoa diverse malen. Het grootste deel van de jaren zeventig en tachtig brachten de Rosoblu door in de Serie B. In 1990-1991 eindigde Genoa als vier de in de Serie A, maar dit succes stond in de schaduw van de Scudetto van stadsgenoot Sampdoria. In het daaropvolgende jaar werd de halve finale van de UEFA Cup bereikt, waarin Ajax net te sterk bleek. In 1995 volgde echter alweer degradatie naar de Serie B. Pas in 2007 wist Genoa na tumultueuze jaren (het kampioenschap van de Serie B in 2005 werd de club afgenomen vanwege betrokkenheid bij een omkoopschandaal en als straf werd Genoa teruggezet naar de Serie C) terug te keren in de Serie A, waar de club een stabiele middenmotor geworden is, met als hoogtepunt de vijfde plaats in 2009.

Genoa wil Boateng kopen en gelijk uitlenen Genoa-voorzitter Enrico Preziosi geeft aan dat Kevin-Prince Boateng spoedig bij zijn club zal tekenen. De middenvelder zal komend seizoen echter niet uitkomen voor Genoa. "Ik loop alvast wat op de zaken vooruit, maar wij zullen Boateng aantrekken en hem vervolgens uitlenen aan een ander team", voorspelt Preziosi. Volgens Italiaanse media zijn AC Milan en SS Lazio kandidaat voor de tijdelijke overname van de Ghanese international, die nu voor Portsmouth speelt. Het is een ingewikkelde constructie waarmee Genoa de speler bij een liefst zo groot mogelijke club in de etalage wil zetten, om volgend jaar wellicht al weer te profiteren van zijn toegenomen marktwaarde. Daarnaast zit Genoa zelf ruim in de centrale middenvelders; het legde Miguel Veloso en Franco Zuculini al vast, terwijl Ivan Juric, Omar Milanetto en Houssaine Kharja er al onder contract staan. Genoa toonde zich tot op heden zeer actief op de markt en is dan ook ambitieus. "Ik mik op een plek in het linkerrijtje", aldus Preziosi. "Maar de Serie A is nog nooit zo gelijkwaardig geweest als dit jaar, dus het gaat lastig worden om te bereiken." Behalve Veloso en Zuculini vertrokken ook Luca Toni en Rafinha naar de Rossoblu. Bocchetti en Sculli op de weg naar buiten Op haar beurt lijkt Genoa snel afscheid te nemen van Giuseppe Sculli en Salvatore Bocchetti. Eerstgenoemde vleugelspeler praat met Internazionale, terwijl Bocchetti in de belangstelling staat van Napoli. "Al weet ik niet of ze hem nu nog steeds willen hebben", besluit Preziosi.

Agent confirms Bocchetti-Milan talks Salvatore Bocchetti’s agent has confirmed “the prospect of an exchange between Milan and Genoa is true.” Rumours had emerged that the Italian international, who was part of the 2010 World Cup squad and never played, is at the centre of an intriguing deal. Genoa would hand him over to Milan in exchange for cash plus Marek Jankulovski, but the Czech appears to be holding up the move. “The prospect of an exchange between Milan and Genoa is true,” agent Flavio Marrucco told Sky Sport Italia. “The two clubs are working to find the right alternative and Bocchetti can certainly be interesting for Milan. I think it all depends on Jankulovski’s decision. We can only sit and wait for the clubs to make a decision. Salvatore is calm and experiencing this moment. I think that we’re unlikely to see a massive development over the weekend, but you can never say never.” The 23-year-old has been at Genoa since 2008 after spells at Ascoli, Lanciano and Frosinone. If Milan do sign the centre-back, it may well suggest that Real Madrid could have a chance at prising away Thiago Silva.

Report: Genoa close on Insua deal While Fiorentina failed to agree personal terms, it’s reported that Genoa are discussing final details with Liverpool’s Emiliano Insua. The full-back had been on the verge of joining the Viola before his wage demands prompted the Tuscan club to pull out this week. Genoa stepped in and, according to Datasport, the final negotiations are underway to complete the transfer. The Rossoblu have reached an agreement with Liverpool for just under £5m and, as with Fiorentina, only personal terms are the stumbling block. It would be another huge transfer for Genoa, who have already snapped up the likes of Eduardo, Andrea Ranocchia, Luca Toni, Miguel Veloso and Rafinha.

Boateng lijkt nu toch via een merkwaardige constructie met Genoa naar Milan te gaan.

Genoa take Boateng for Milan? It’s reported that Genoa will complete the signing of Kevin Prince Boateng in order to loan him to Milan, cutting Lazio out of the equation. “Boateng? We won’t name names, but we’ll see how things progress over the week,” commented Coach Massimiliano Allegri this morning. The Portsmouth man is at the centre of a transfer triangle in Serie A, as he is wanted by three top sides. According to the latest suggestions from the Italian media, Genoa have the upper hand when it comes to sealing a deal and could make it official by tomorrow. However, the club has already signed so many players this summer that Boateng would be used as part-exchange in a different transfer. Boateng would go to Milan on loan with the right to buy half his contract at the end of the season.

Bocchetti wanted by Napoli Friday 13 August, 2010 Napoli have become the latest possible destination for Italy and Genoa stopper Salvatore Bocchetti. The port club are looking to offload the Italian 2010 World Cup squad member and he’s been linked with various clubs. Juventus are apparently interested, while there have also been suggestions of a possible swap deal with Milan’s Marek Jankulovksi or Daniele Bonera. However, the latest speculation is claiming that the versatile defender is attracting the attention of Napoli.The San Paolo outfit are apparently pondering a deal that could see Fabiano Santacroce move in the other direction.

Dos Santos in Genoa link Friday 13 August, 2010 Genoa will target Tottenham’s Giovani Dos Santos once they sell Giuseppe Sculli to Internazionale. Sculli will join the Nerazzurri next week as a replacement for the Manchester City bound Mario Balotelli. Finding a substitute for Sculli is now a top priority for the Marassi outfit who have already had a busy summer of spending. Dos Santos, who appeared for Mexico at the World Cup, has been linked with Serie A rivals Milan in recent days. However, whispers in the peninsula claim that the 21-year-old is also of interest to the ambitious Genoa. Dos Santos is a graduate of the Barcelona youth academy and moved to Spurs in the summer of 2008. He spent last season on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray. He wouldn’t come cheap though given that he is valued at around €10m. Genoa will only receive something in the region of €5m from Inter for Sculli.

Gasperini raised eyebrows when he replaced star centre-back Andrea Ranocchia at half time when the score was still 1-1. Michele Marcolini then put Chievo ahead for the first time in the match before Sergio Pellissier sealed the points to send his side top of the table. “I didn't expect Ranocchia to be excluded,” Preziosi said. “I am perplexed. It's three points lost and that weighs down on us because we need to win against teams like Chievo. We lost above all in midfield. We lacked a little lucidity, which can perhaps be put down to tiredness". “Anyway I am not at all satisfied. I hope that it doesn't happen anymore,” he concluded.

GENOA, Leonardo is an option Genoa chairman Enrico Preziosi is not pleased with his coach Gian Piero Gasperini's work lately. According to sources close to the club, the once solid duo is not getting along anymore. Preziosi was pondering on the future of his coach already at the end of last season, but eventually decided to stick with him. Past success and Gasperini's daring 3-4-3 system were hard to replace so suddenly. However (and according our sources and transfer market insider Gianluca Di Marzio), Preziosi is keen on former AC Milan coach Leonardo. An approach could be made if Gasperini will fail to bring better results on a consistent basis.

De Engelse eerstedivisionist heeft een klacht ingediend bij Engelse en Italiaanse autoriteiten. 'Pompey' kan het geld goed gebruiken. De ploeg degradeerde afgelopen seizoen uit de Premier League, onder meer doordat het van de Engelse bond negen punten in mindering kreeg vanwege financiële problemen. De club staat ruim 140 miljoen euro in het rood.

Genoa: 'We paid for Boateng' Genoa have explained the Kevin Prince Boateng situation. “We have paid both the first and second instalments to Portsmouth.” This week the English club reportedly made a formal complaint over the missed payment of the first instalment, which was due at the start of the month. “Genoa have paid both the first and second instalments to Portsmouth for Boateng,” insisted general manager Alessandro Zarbano. “It is true there was a delay on the first, but it certainly wasn’t to be blamed on Genoa. The explanation for what happened is very simple. In the invoice, Portsmouth did not indicate the banking details and they were also incomplete in the contract. When we realised, we made a request and once we received the right details, we made the payment. In fact, we have even gone so far as to pay the second instalment around 10 days earlier than the planned deadline of October 5.” Although the Ghanaian is owned by Genoa, he has been loaned to Milan for this season.

Genoa heeft eindelijk aan zijn verplichtingen voldaan rondom de transfer van Kevin-Prince Boateng. Portsmouth wachtte al maanden op een gedeelte van de transfersom van zes miljoen euro. De eerste twee van de vier termijnen zijn inmiddels afgerekend. Portsmouth verkeert in grote financiële problemen en had het geld daardoor hard nodig. Adrew Andronikou, financieel directeur van de Championship-club, laat weten dat de club inmiddels drie miljoen euro heeft ontvangen. De andere helft volgt, zoals afgesproken, later. Boateng speelt overigens niet voor Genoa. De Italiaanse club verhuurde de middenvelder direct aan AC Milan.

Toni: Genoa fans are crazier than me Luca Toni believes Genoa's supporters are even crazier than him after seeing them close up following his match-winning goal against Bari. Toni struck in the 95th minute to give his side a precious 2-1 win before going to celebrate under the Gradinata Nord. Interviewed in Il Secolo XIX, he said: “It was a very important goal and then again I liked scoring under the Nord. “I see the fans celebrate. They are crazier than me. “We were down to 10 men, but we tried until the end. This place lives enthusiastically and we have seen what these fans can give. “We wanted to win at all costs. Other teams would have given up and tried not to concede a goal. Instead, we threw everyone forward in search of victory. “We needed it. Now the table starts to look fairer,” he concluded.

Toni wants Azzurri return Genoa striker Luca Toni has spoken of his desire to net the goals that could win him the Serie A scoring crown and a recall to the Italy squad. The summer signing from Bayern Munich, after a six month loan spell at Roma, hasn’t played for his country since the 2009 Confederations Cup. “It would have been nice to go to South Africa last summer, but I have to respect the decisions of the Coach,” he said when asked about Marcello Lippi’s 2010 World Cup snub. “For the time being, [new boss Cesare] Prandelli is working with youngsters for the future of the national side. “I just hope to score so many goals with Genoa that I can re-launch my candidacy for the squad. Prandelli has my phone number.” Toni, now 33, has scored two goals for the Grifone so far, but has many more in mind before the season is over. “I could have played in a less competitive championship for more money, but I dream of winning the Capocannoniere crown again,” he continued. “I want to take Genoa far and help them to compete for a prestigious placing, perhaps to finish higher than a club who have a superior budget to ours.” Toni last won the Serie A top scorer crown in 2005-06 after striking 31 goals in 38 games for Fiorentina.

Few no what to expect of Roma as they are currently second from bottom in Serie A despite having a team tipped among the favourites for the Scudetto. “We will try and win like we have always done away from home, even if it will be a difficult game,” Gasperini said. “We have always played our best games at home where we have a notable added value and where we can exploit a great number of chances. “Anyway this is a situation common to all the teams. Unfortunately there is the tendency to attribute this characteristic only to Genoa. “Roma have an potential in attack equal to Milan and Inter, and they have many quality players. “If De Rossi won't be there, danger men like Borriello and Totti will be. “As for us, I don't understand those people who say we are in decline,” he concluded.

Gasperini blasts negativity Gian Piero Gasperini has taken act with the negative atmosphere surrounding Genoa following their disappointing start to the season. The Rossoblu were expected to be among the top four in Serie A after spending in excess of €30m this summer on new playing staff. However, just two wins in seven games leave Genoa 11th in the League table ahead of this evening's Coppa Italia tie with Grosseto. “I have read about an inadequate position in the table or one of complete concern even,” Gasperini snarled. “But I believe that there is a little in the way of objectivity on the part of those who write. The team is doing just fine the way it is. “I am satisfied. There continues to be great negativity around Genoa and I don't understand the reasons why. “Last year we lost against Milan and Roma conceding five or three goals. This year instead we have lost narrowly, staying in the game until the very end. “The defeats weigh you down, but there are no arguments inside the dressing room. This team will give a big surprise with time,” he concluded.
