Burnley Football Club, nicknamed The Clarets, are a professional English football club managed by Owen Coyle and based in Burnley, Lancashire. They were founder members of The Football League in 1888 and in 2009-10 will return to the top division after a 33 year absence and play in the Premier League for the first time. The club colours are claret and blue and their home ground since 1883 has been Turf Moor.

Burnley have been Football League Champions twice, in 1920-21 and 1959-60, and were FA Cup winners on 25 April 1914, beating Liverpool 1-0 at Crystal Palace. The Clarets also reached the 1961 quarter-finals of the European Cup before losing to Hamburger SV (Germany).

As recently as 1960 they were league champions, but have been outside the top flight since 1976 and from 1985 had a seven-year spell in the lowest tier of the Football League. In 1987 they narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference. Between 2000 and 2009 they played in the second tier of English football, until they gained promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 33 years after defeating Sheffield United 1-0 in the Championship play-off final.

Recente geschiedenis

Stadion Turf Moor

Turf Moor is a football stadium in Burnley, Lancashire. It is the home ground of English football club Burnley F.C., who have played there since 1883.

It is situated on Harry Potts Way in Burnley, and has a capacity of 22,546, all seated. Its four main stands are the James Hargreaves Stand, the Jimmy McIlroy Stand, the Bob Lord Stand and the Cricket Field Stand.

Its first game saw Burnley play Rawtenstall in 1883 shortly after the club had moved from their original premises at Calder Vale. It is one of the oldest football grounds still in use in the United Kingdom, behind only Preston North End's ground, Deepdale and Bramall Lane.

The record attendance at Turf Moor came in 1924 when Burnley played Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup with 54,755 people attending.

New Burnley director, Brendan Flood, has stated that the ground will go through further redevelopment, and the plans were publicly released on 24 July, 2007. It will be a major development, costing £20m. The plans - which would incorporate the redevelopment of the Cricket Field Stand and the moving of the players' entrance tunnel, have been put on hold until the current financial climate improves. With a futher development of a second tier on the Bob Lord stand should Burnley reach the Premier League, the anticipated capacity of Turf Moor will eventually be 28,000.

The future

In July 2007 Burnley revealed plans for a £20 million redevelopment of Turf Moor and the club's training facility at Gawthorpe Hall. This includes a new stand at the Cricket Field End to accommodate 2,500 fans and a redevelopment of the Bob Lord Stand, which will house a cinema within it. It is planned to move the changing rooms to the home fans' (rather than, as currently, the away fans') end of the ground. Other planned improvements include a new club superstore and other retail outlets, new business offices on the site of the current club shop, and a new hotel. With a futher development of a second tier on the Bob Lord stand the anticipated capacity of Turf Moor will eventually be 28,000.[3]

This investment has been linked with the emergence of new director Brendan Flood, although no details of the precise source of the funding have been made public. Work was expected to start in late 2007 and finish in time for the 2010 season.

Burnley deny planning to replace manager Brian Laws

Struggling Burnley have dismissed newspaper reports that they are planning to replace manager Brian Laws. In a statement on the club website, chairman Barry Kilby described the story as "ludicrous, irresponsible, damaging and inaccurate".

Laws, 48, was appointed as Owen Coyle's successor in mid-January, but the team have won only one of 11 games since. Despite the poor recent results, Kilby said: "We are not in the process of looking for a replacement for Brian."

And he added: "Everyone involved with Burnley Football Club is putting every ounce of effort into staying in the Premier League."

Burnley are currently third from bottom of the Premier League, three points behind West Ham and Wolves, the two sides immediately above them in the table. They have a reasonable run-in to the end of the season, starting with local derbies against Wigan and Blackburn.

Laws is a former Burnley player but was a surprise choice as manager following Coyle's decision to move to Bolton, having been sacked from his previous post with Sheffield Wednesday last December. His appointment was made in part because of the results of a survey by accountants Deloitte and Touche that placed him top of a list of managers based on performance relative to budget.

However, they were beaten 2-1 at home by relegation rivals Wolves on Saturday, though Laws insisted he remained optimistic, saying: "The season doesn't end today and there are still eight games to go. There's still a lot of points to be played for and whilst that is a body-blow for us we can't let it affect us and destroy our last eight games."
