Steve McClaren is ambitieus, FC Twente is ambitieus en dat past.� Loopbaan Steve McClaren Steve McClaren was als speler actief bij onder meer Hull City AFC, Derby County, Bristol City en Oxford United. Als trainer startte hij zijn loopbaan bij Oxford United. Daarna was hij actief als assistent bij Derby County en Manchester United, waar hij samenwerkte met Sir Alex Ferguson. In 1999 won Manchester United ‘The Treble’. In 2001 werd hij hoofdtrainer van Middlesbrough. Met Middlesbrough won hij in 2004 de League Cup en stond hij in 2006 in de finale van de UEFA Cup. Vanaf EURO 2004 was hij tevens actief bij het Engelse elftal. Daar fungeerde hij als assistent van Sven-Göran Eriksson. Vanaf 1 augustus 2006 tot en met 22 november 2007 was McClaren bondscoach van Engeland. Sinds 20 juni 2008 is Steve McClaren Trainer/Coach en Manager Technische Zaken bij Twente. McClaren boekte in zijn eerste seizoen mooie successen met de Enschedese club. In de Eredivisie eindigde FC Twente op de tweede plaats en reikte de ploeg tot de KNVB-bekerfinale. Bovendien werd in de UEFA Cup de poulefase bereikt en wist het te overwinteren op het Europese podium. De laatste keer dat FC Twente dit in een Europees toernooi wist te bereiken was dertig jaar geleden.

Wie had er bijna twee jaar geleden gedacht dat Steve McClaren haalbaar zou zijn voor FC Twente en wie er überhaupt gedacht dat hij zo'n prestatie neer zou zetten?

Fantastisch dat zo'n man in Nederland werkt en als objectief toeschouwer is het alleen maar te prijzen wat hij bij FC Twente bewerkstelligt. Voor de Tukkers is het denk ik alleen maar te hopen dat Ferguson niet snel het bijltje erbij neer legt in Manchester en McClaren door kan gaan met het proces en bouwen van FC Twente. Dan kan het eigenlijk bijna niet anders dan dat er een kampioenschap aan komt daar.

In het AD stond gisteren dat hij heel veel gebruik maakt van een sportpsycholoog die ook door mensen als Federer en Tiger Woods wordt gebruikt. FC Twente - spelers hebben daar ook regelmatig sessies mee en worden er blijkbaar beter van.

Ben erg benieuwd hoelang hij nog in Nederland trainer is.

McClaren silencing critics with FC Twente Phil Minshull | 10:30 UK time, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 It's worth saying quietly as he was probably the most derided England manager, possibly ever, certainly since Graham Taylor. Nonetheless, McClaren has been one of the unsung success stories in European football this season. After taking over at Twente Enschede back in the summer of 2008 after, as the Independent put it in one of his few interviews with the English media since moving to the Netherlands, he left England under a rain cloud, he has revitalised the club from the rural Eastern part of the country. He will be forever remembered for the damning image of him watching impotently from beneath his umbrella at Wembley as England's chances of qualifying for Euro 2008 were washed away by Croatia. But if Twente do lift the Dutch title for the first time in 83 years, he might be able to hold his head up high back home again. Twente - or the Tukkers, as they are nicknamed - last won the Eredivisie in 1926, when they were known as Sportclub Enschede. The closest they had come to repeating that feat before McClaren's arrival was when they finished runners-up in 1974. In his first season at the club, McClaren again took them back to second place, while they also got to the Dutch Cup final and were very unlucky to miss out on making the Champions League group stages, losing out on away goals to Sporting Lisbon. This season, Twente are currently on top of the Dutch first division at the halfway point - as they have been from three games into the campaign - and are unbeaten in their 18 matches. So how has McClaren done so well in the Netherlands when he was such a disappointment during his 16-month stint in the England job? Well, there are obvious differences in scale between being the coach of one of the world's leading football nations and a club in a league that is arguably only the sixth most prestigious or powerful in Europe - after the big five of England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Nevertheless, given Twente's resources, with the club historically overshadowed by the likes of Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV, McClaren has done a remarkable job, akin to his achievements at Middlesbrough, and gained huge respect in the Netherlands for his tactical astuteness. He also realised that Twente still lacked a little creativity and firepower up front last season, despite their exploits, and managed to snatch Costa Rican international Bryan Ruiz from under the noses of Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar, as well as acquiring the Slovakian midfielder Miroslav Stoch on loan from Chelsea. The pair have scored 13 and eight goals respectively so far this season and have arguably been the best signings in the Eredivisie this season. Credit should also go to Twente's seemingly ageless DR Congo-born Swiss international Blaise Nkufo, who has been scoring prodigiously since he arrived at the club in 2003. The 34-year-old striker has also bagged eight goals this season. If Twente do manage to hold off the challenge of PSV, who are also unbeaten this term, then history might subsequently be a little kinder to the man who has been cruelly dubbed "the wally with the brolly". McClaren signed a one-year extension to his contract in October, which means he is tied to Twente until the end of next season, and has made no secret of the fact that he would like to lead them in the Champions League group stages. However, he has also been open about wanting to make a return to the Premier League sometime soon. And it would come as no surprise to see a club pay good money to bring him back to England this summer.

At its heart is the eclectic, slightly edgy university town of Enschede, a sort of mini Berlin and the home of McClaren's FC Twente. It is here that, on Sunday afternoon, the former England coach hopes to beat Feyenoord and, depending on Ajax's result, become the first English manager since Bobby Robson at Porto in 1996 to win a major European league title. With two games left Twente – a Dutch equivalent of Ipswich or Norwich – are one point clear of Martin Jol's Ajax in the Eredivisie and on course to secure a first Championship since 1926. "We're optimistic but we haven't done it yet," McClaren says. "I just hope we can for the people here. They accepted me straight away and have taken me into their lives. This part of Holland is known as Tuckerland and I'm one of the Tuckers now." Asked if it is correct that he is Enschede's most famous Tucker, the 48-year-old laughs before finally replying: "It's been a good two years here." After finishing second last season Twente had tight hold of the title until Tuesday night when they suffered only their second defeat of the season, losing 1-0 at AZ Alkmaar hours after their team bus had been pelted by missiles hurled from a viaduct. Although everyone escaped injury it proved an unnerving experience, totally out of sync with two seasons during which McClaren has been met with such friendliness and openness that he has shed the guarded carapace developed by so many English – not to mention England – managers. At Twente's training ground in Hengelo, the small satellite town adjacent to Enschede where he has a house, there is an open-door policy unheard of in Premier League environs. "People are very open," he says. "Anyone can come and wander round, watch us and discuss what we're doing. Journalists are welcome to come every day to see us train and talk to me or any player they want to. It's been quite a culture shock but it's been good, you have real relationships, real trust with journalists." At Twente McClaren has rediscovered the benefits of being himself. Convinced spin was king and success in football impossible without the right image, his time in charge of Middlesbrough and England saw him become overly obsessed with presentation and public relations. One Friday morning at Middlesbrough's training ground reporters attending McClaren's weekly news conference noted a stray piece of A4 paper left lying on the desk. It turned out to be a crib sheet, listing questions he was likely to be asked – along with appropriate answers. Small wonder Boro's then manager routinely ran late for such briefings. Quite apart from being prepped by a press officer, he never spoke to journalists without also visiting Bill Beswick, the club's former sports psychologist. Beswick advised him on how to put a positive spin on the most unpromising situation but McClaren merely seemed strangely wooden as he trotted out clichéd sound-bites punctuated by the latest buzzword. No one in the Netherlands accuses Twente's manager of being similarly "false". Indeed McClaren, who has been accompanied by no English staff, is thriving without his old, once sizeable, support network. "I haven't brought any English connections," says the man whose team regularly attracts 24,000-strong, unbelievably noisy, sell-out crowds. "My assistants are all Dutch, there are some fantastic young coaches here. I thought it was important to embrace and understand the culture of the club and Dutch football rather than import a different one. Anyway when Sir Bobby Robson advised me to take this job he said: 'Go, son, and make sure you go on your own.'" In a country significantly less fixated by celebrity than England, McClaren has rediscovered the difference between substance and superficiality and decided he will stand or fall by virtue of his coaching and man-management ability. "There's an intense spotlight on football here," he says. "But it's hours of discussion about tactics, technique and quality rather than the sort of things the English talk about. The Dutch aren't really hooked up on fame." Although the €5.5m (£4.8m) McClaren invested in signing Bryan Ruiz, a free-scoring Costa Rican forward bought from Ghent who now boasts 25 goals in 44 league appearances, shows he has not lost his transfer market eye, a tight budget has precluded the possibility of signing players along the lines of the Boro recruits Gaizka Mendieta, Bolo Zenden and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. "This is a community club, owned by the fans, so we have to sell players every year and polish up rough diamonds," he says. Forced to rely on improving personnel on the training ground, McClaren has reminded himself he is an exceptionally good coach. These days, though, he is a considerably more daring manager than Middlesbrough fans may recall. An enthusiastic convert to the Dutch interpretation of 4-3-3 featuring two genuine wingers, this long-term purist has been hailed as a true disciple of total football by none other than Johan Cruyff. "I decided I'd better adapt to 4-3-3," McClaren says. "If it was good enough for thousands of Dutchmen it was good enough for me. And in Holland, football is about performance, fans can see their team lose but still be happy if they've played well." This attitude has proved remarkably liberating. "I'm not frightened of failure any more because, after the failure with England, I've seen the ultimate," he says. "It didn't kill me and I thought, 'Well, what more can they throw at me?' It's made me a wiser and more experienced manager and I'd like to think a better person." A willingness to uproot from the family home in North Yorkshire, which this frequent flier on KLM's Amsterdam-Durham Tees Valley route tries to return to on a weekly basis, marked McClaren out as far braver than the majority of his compatriots. Indeed he has joined the late Robson – a staunch ally and mentor – Terry Venables and Roy Hodgson in becoming one of the very few English managers to pack his tracksuit, unearth his passport and reap rich dividends. Despite the year remaining on his Twente contract and a claim that "I do enjoy it here, I'd like to stay", it is inconceivable that offers from England and elsewhere in Europe will not be forthcoming this summer. Expat life suits him but has, inevitably, contained a few tricky moments. Remember that comedy foreign accent – a YouTube hit – McClaren affected while answering a Dutch journalist? "My three sons all said: 'Bloody hell, Dad,'" he acknowledges. "But I have noticed that, when people come over from England to see me, they all do the same. They suddenly start talking very slowly in strange voices and I have to say: 'The Dutch can understand, they speak perfect English.'"

Ik heb uiteraard alle wedstrijden gezien van Twente en heb hem misschien op een paar foutjes betrapt , dat die te lang wacht met een wissel , maar ik heb hem ook zoveel goeie dingen van hem gezien , waarbij het totaal niet liep en met zijn wissels de wedstrijd omdraaide . nee, een geweldige trainer ...

Spelers horen te staan waar ze staan en ik denk dat die heel goed met mensen om kan gaan en dat is tegenwoordig 50 % van het trainervak .

Tuurlijk zal die weg gaan , net als Ruiz , en Douglas en misschien wel meer , maar ik weet niet of die spelers beseffen dat ze onsterfelijk kunnen worden in de lengte der jaren , want ik geloof gewoonweg niet dat Twente structureel mee gaat doen om de titel .

Daarvoor heb je PSV en Ajax die altijd in de top mee zullen doen .

But that might well change this month with an English manager who has gone about building one of the most remarkable seasons in European football. Steve McClaren is two wins away from the Dutch title and a place in next season's Champions League after his side FC Twente beat Heerenveen 2-0 on Saturday. He has left the traditional big guns of Dutch football trailing with a club who have never before been champions of the Netherlands in their 45-year history. By way of comparison, it would be like Fulham winning the Premier League. It is a potentially stupendous achievement by an English coach, made all the more impressive because it is exactly the kind of challenge we should wish our brightest managers to undertake. We import so much coaching talent, redressing the balance of trade is a cause for celebration. Would it be too much to ask English football to forget about the disappointments of England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 and feel proud that McClaren is flying the flag for English managers overseas? Should Twente get the necessary two wins in their remaining three games, starting with a big one against AZ Alkmaar tomorrow, then McClaren will have achieved something that so few Englishmen in modern times have accomplished. If it were anyone else, he would be regarded as a trailblazer but McClaren is still fighting the tired old prejudices that date back to that Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. In the Netherlands, the description most commonly applied to McClaren is that he is a "gentleman", in the old, genteel English sense of the word. He does not say a great deal in the media but he is regarded as fair and even-tempered and in a quietly subversive way he has gone about toppling the established hierarchy of Dutch football, rather like Sir Alex Ferguson once did in Scotland with Aberdeen. In fact there are even conspiracy theories in the rural eastern province of Twente that the Dutch football association (KNVB) do not want McClaren's team to win the title. The KNVB are said to fear that Twente are not sufficiently equipped to compete in the Champions League and a bad showing might harm the Netherlands' Uefa co-efficient – which dictates the number of qualifying places they get. McClaren is not just up against the Dutch establishment and the big clubs in a country which traditionally produces some of the best coaches in the world; he is doing it on a shoestring budget and he is thriving. Football has plenty of stories of redemption and McClaren's is one of the very best. Even if he does win the league this month there will be difficult decisions for McClaren over his future. He has one year left on his existing deal after this season but he faces having to rebuild his Twente team for the third time this summer with even the promise of Champions League football unlikely to persuade all his best players to stay. The long-serving Swiss striker Blaise Nkufo has already agreed to join the Seattle Sounders next season in the MLS and the 35-year-old Danish midfielder Kenneth Perez will probably retire. Some of the biggest clubs in Europe are looking at Twente's Brazilian centre-back Douglas and top goalscorer Bryan Ruiz, the Costa Rican winger McClaren signed last summer. Ronnie Stam, a 25-year-old Dutch right-back, is also in demand. Bought for £5m from Ghent, Ruiz has proved one of the most successful signings in European football this season – he scored a hat-trick in four minutes against Sparta Rotterdam just over two weeks ago. McClaren has used Twente's scouting network and his own contacts to assemble a team from the remains of the one that finished second last season and lost three key players, including Marko Arnautovic to Internazionale, for a total of £22m. He has also proved himself a decisive, independent manager. When Twente's influential midfielder Theo Janssen was found to have been drunk when he was involved in car crash in November, McClaren led the way. He suspended Janssen for two months. It did not help Twente's title push but it was the right thing to do. McClaren was never the caricature that some sought to portray him as; he was just a coach who, by his own admission, might have got the biggest job in English football a little too early. His achievement in reaching the Uefa Cup final in his last season at Middlesbrough was overshadowed by the walloping they got from Seville and his disintegrating relationship with chairman Steve Gibson and captain Gareth Southgate. With England, he suffered the most abject injury crises of any recent manager in crucial matches. Yes, he made mistakes but against Croatia in that decisive game at Wembley in November 2007 he was without Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Wes Brown, Michael Carrick, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. The comparison with Fulham holds true in another respect. Their manager Roy Hodgson has deservedly been praised for his club's achievements this season. He too has had highs and lows in his career although none quite as dramatic as McClaren. Both of them are talented English managers; both of them have had great success with small clubs on limited budgets. If we can give Hodgson the credit for restoring credibility to the reputation of the English manager then we must surely do the same for McClaren. He is English and he is making a success of himself in a competitive foreign league, making him something of a rare commodity.

Hij gaf alleen aan dat hij het raar vond, niet dat wij er nadeel van hadden. Was geloof ik ook nog in reactie op een vraag. Ik vind het trouwens ook raar, maar het heeft voor- en nadelen. Het nadeel is dat je misschien wat uit je ritme raakt. Het voordeel is dat pijntjes weggewerkt kunnen worden, en je misschien fysiek nog wat kunt doen. Ik denk dat het in ons geval al met al niet verkeerd is.
